Scan tools for home use
« on: May 15, 2020, 02:20:11 PM »
I have been doing a little more side work for friends/family, and just picked up a free '98 Jeep Grand Cherokee that starts but stalls.  I'm thinking it's time to pick up a decent home scan tool for pulling codes, anyone have any suggestions?

I have an Autel scan tool was about 275 dollars but scans any make and you can check live data, airbag errors just about anything you can think of. I bought because my wife BMW 328 had an airbag light on and they wanted 1600 to repair it. I bought the tool and rset in in 3 minutes well worth the money. I also diagnosed intermittent misfire in that car which turned out to be bad coil packs. I little clunky to use but worth every penny.

Thanks, that’s one brand I’d seen with good reviews

I have been pleased with my Autel MS906 BT. I used to think Modis was the end all of the aftermarket but the MaxiSys cost a third of the Snap-On.

I have a BlueDriver scan tool.  It's pretty impressive what this little thing can do, plus you can datalog straight to your phone.  I used it to diagnose several issues on my Volvo which wound up being easy fixes, and it paid for itself within a month.

You can also use it as a bluetooth gauge if you have a phone holder in the vehicle.  That's not really my thing, but some people might find it handy.
