Air cleaner snorkle
« on: March 23, 2020, 02:09:19 PM »
I have this 1970 pickup 360 oil bath air cleaner and it has a snorkel which looks very "musclecar-esque". Does anyone know if this is the same snorkel used on anything more valuable than a truck?

I agree. Look on the bottom side for a stamped part number. If it starts with C8W then it is a fairly common 390 FE and was used on most cars and Pickups from 1968 up to maybe 1972 or later. Also if you can measure the distance between the mounting fastener where it bolts to the main body. I'll check what the C8W one is later today and check back in.

The Ford group number for the air cleaner duct & valve assembly is -9A626-. The Ford Truck Parts book shows the part number for your ‘70 oil bath air filter duct & valve assembly should be C8WY-9A626-A. I looked in the Ford & Mercury car parts books and it looks like that C8WY-9A626-A duct & valve assembly were used on various ‘68 Cougar & Mustang 390 2V, ‘68 Torino & Comet 390 2V, and ‘68-‘71 full size Ford & Mercury 390 2V. Now keep in mind the parts book shows it as an assembly of both duct ( snorkel ) and valve, since that’s how Ford serviced it, but it’s possible the snorkel itself may be the same as some FE 4V applications, but the parts book doesn’t show that. I believe the ‘68 427 GTE Cougar came with the chrome open element air cleaner, so it likely isn’t that application.

Here’s the excerpt from the truck parts book:

Kevin Rolph

1967 Cougar Drag Car ( under constuction )
1966 7 litre Galaxie
1966 Country Squire 390
1966 Cyclone GT 390
1968 Torino GT 390
1972 Gran Torino wagon
1978 Lincoln Mk V

Hmmm, it's W, so Cougar, perhaps Cobra Jet, now i'm giddy!
Then the excitement wears off when I see even the 302 and paper element air cleaners all use the same one.

Thank you Kevin.

Not sure if an X code 2V Cougar or a 70 pickup is the more valuable now!

Here's what I find when I Google that part number.
Snorkel - Air Cleaner - X Code 390 - Used ~ 1968 Mercury Cougar / 1968 Ford Mustang
Part Number: 15134 (676)
Air cleaner intake assembly or snorkel specific to the one year only 390-2V premium fuel engine, (X code engine). Ford part number C8WY-9A626-A. *Note - This snorkel has a different spacing on the mounting ears, it will not mount to a 390GT air cleaner base. [More Info]

The price didn't show in that but it was only $60 so not the golden ticket to retiring on a topical island i'd hoped!

It is stenciled C8WF-9A626-A on the underside.

Common 390 snorkle. The CJ "kink" is in the opposite direction ( back instead of forward). The 428 CJ site has excellent pictures of the snorkles.
