Got myself a 68 1/2!
« on: November 09, 2019, 01:45:44 PM »
Need a few pieces to put a 4-speed in it. (Factory 3.91 auto car but I want a standard)
- Clutch pedals and all associated pieces.
- 24" 3 core radiator and shroud (390 0r 428) A rebuildable core would be good too.
- 4 speed cross member. I'm getting some confusing info on this, some say a C-4 is the same but I've seen notations referencing a big block specific cross member.

The crossmember is big block specific and has 390STD marking on it. I think I have a spare 69/70 big block Mustang crossmember that is similar but it they have 250 390STD markings. The small block crossmembers will supposedly work on some cars and they are significantly cheaper so might be worth a try if you correctness doesn't bother you. But the big block crossmembers hang a little lower than the smallblock.

The small block absolutely does work. It changes the driveline angle slightly because the transmission sits slightly higher.  The 69-70 FE/250 member will work and is identical to the 67-68 offering other than the stamping mentioned 390 STD /250 and the slots for the transmission mount are elongated on the 69-70 cross member.

The FE manual transmission crossmember is different, as noted already. Here’s a nice diagram with dimensions from the West Coast Classic Cougar website.

I ran the small block cross member on my car with the 427..No issues what so ever..OEM shroud will be pricey.Repo's are available.68 rads are different than 67 as the lower mounts are in different places. Also 68 clutch pedals differ than 67's as the 68 column has a bigger diameter due to the plastic acordian cover on it..Congrats on the purchase....

Yes, there are differences between the FE four speed and the small block offerings. They still fit and simply raise the transmission up slightly as a stated. Fact, not opinion. The only differences 67- 8 and 69-70  on the FE four speed member  is the elongated slot for the mount and the 250 stamp.  I've had both in my hands and had a small block in my vehicle at one point.

Jay Cushman has the crossmember for sale on Facebook. You could try him for some of the other parts too. Screenshot from Facebook:

Holy Crap! 650.00 on the C60E bellhousing?   The crossmember is in line with prices noted in recent history. The bellhousing needs to be bead blasted and either painted cast iron or phosphated.
