Guess the horsepower - second of two - "461 truck motor"
« on: November 01, 2019, 05:58:03 AM »
As in the other post, dyno day is 15 Nov.  This one may be more tricky, this one is going in my 1971 4x4 truck, so a bit more mild

- 461 inch FE, Racetech pistons, 24 cc D-cup, 1.5/1.5/3.0 Mahle rings, 9.80:1 compression, .010 above deck and .041 quench distance, as with the others all good machining, torque plate etc
- SCAT 6.70 rods, SCAT crank, internally balanced
- Ford windage tray
- D2 heads, 2.09/1.67 CJ valves, undercut stems, good valve job, ported by Les Schmader, medium riser port entry dimensions, flow 277-280 intake side at valve lift, 195 exhaust
- Cam is hydraulic flat tappet, 280/286 adv, 230/236 @ .050 .585 lift, 112 LSA on 106, Lykins rockers
- M57HV standard oil pump
- Victor EFI intake, port matched and some blending on roof, nothing aggressive, but nicely matched to med riser port
- Not running EFI, although injectors will be in there, will be running a standard distributor AND 850 Holley for the dyno

This will likely be lower power, and lower peak RPM, but should be pretty strong just the same and is built for a 4x4.  Dyno will tell on the evening of 15 Nov.  Guess away!  We may even try something goofy on this one like a big Dominator to match the 1000 cfm airflow of the future EFI, we will see how the day goes.

I'm gonna say 475 HP and 550 TQ.  I have a similar engine but stock CJ intake.

491 HP and 555 TQ.....wonder how the graph looks with the victor....not vastly different than my old build and curious to see how the heads/intake differ.

I'll post everything, likely will have to get the graphs up a few days later, but will run back to the computer after Brent and I go for a Cattleman's steak dinner that night!

Uniquely ahead of where I should be LOL.  Loading up Monday, goof off Tuesday and hit the dyno Wednesday!

The secret sauce will be a special distributor and wires off Brent's 352...didn't feel like pulling a distributor out of a running vehicle and the engine will get a locaked distributor with ECM controlled curve, so no use on the dyno.  Brent offered to let me use his MSD from Project Junkyjunk

Who knows what random carb will end up there, I want to get a big one on there at some point for fun, but it likely only needs a 750

You said a special distributor... so I may have to up my guess to 1500hp/1250lbs/ft instead of the 437/501 it will likely make!

Some great estimates, but here it is.....drumroll

490 hp @ 5000 RPM didn't really drop off after that, liked 38 degrees total and was in the high 500s in torque, but I forgot the dyno sheet at the shop and don't have the exact torque number, I will update tomorrow.  The HP number and RPM is accurate though

Brent and I both think with some tuning and maybe an oil change from 20w50 at 80+ psi, it'd inch over 500 hp, we didn't bother for 2 reasons, 1) the a/f was close enough and I just wanted to get a good cam break-in and total timing number for the EFI, not like I was going to run Brent's loaner carb later, and 2) we were both eager to spin the 352 and play!

The 461 turned out to be a strong engine with nice power and a diesel like torque curve, perfect for my 4x4.  I will post updated numbers tomorrow night and put the entire build on the dyno results afterwards.

As always when I bring an engine to town, absolutely a fun day with Brent, and the added bonus of a fun day was the overachiever of a truck motor

Now to clean 50 year old black 352 sludge off my fingers before I put the other 461 on the pump tomorrow :)

Wow...without going over, the closest guesser on engine #2 is ALSO Stangman....that's 2 for 2!

His guess was 489/545 on an actual of 490/554

A few close guesses, and again, superb estimating!   All the info and torque curve (if you can call it that) is in the dyno forum

Fun stuff!

I am dying here! I had 491/555....gotta be freaking kidding me..I was over by 1/1 C'mon!  :o  Dang inflation got me!
Very similar numbers to my 445 just some different parts and a little more cubes...Good job Ross.  I am itching to see how mine does in my 4x4 but that project is slow as molasses.  Let us know how you like it once it goes in....try not to break to many driveline parts.

You get the honorable mention :)  nailed it, and appreciate you spotting me 1/1 :)  We could have likely tuned that
