Heavy Clutch
« on: October 25, 2019, 06:49:09 AM »
I’m having a issue with the clutch being to hard to push on the ball of my foot, I have neuropathy in my left foot. I’m using a 3 finger Ram pressure plate...7/8 mc with a 1” slave. I know I can change the Mc but would a different style pressure plate it throw out bearing make a difference?

The new RAM plates are pretty light.

I’d switch to a 3/4” master.  Went through this on my Cobra.

If you have pedal bushings, converting to ball bearings might help reduce pedal effort.  I'm thinking about sending my assembly to be converted since it's well worn.

I know nothing about "mustangsteve". I found his site via a Ford forum so I'm curious if anyone here has been a customer or has an alternative for restoring the brake/clutch pedal assembly.

It’s been so long I can’t remember if I went through mustang Steve but I do know that the bearing upgrade is worth it. My truck has the heavy McLeod clutch in it. I’ve driven it in stop and go traffic in LA and rock crawling in the desert and my left leg is still the same size as my right. Not a problem.

Brent, any advantage to switch to a diaphragm pressure plate over the 3 finger one I’m using?

Not generally.   The modern Long style pressure plates don't rely hard on clamping force and more on disc material.  Some of the diaphragm plates have as much clamping force as the 3-finger plates.

I still run the bell crank and clutch fork , all street driven , stock 428 with 3.00 gear , what would be a good pressure plate psi to run ? I have a street , strip ram in it now and it is to hard to push the pedal down for old knees . thanks .

I used that kit on my Fairlane. Well worth it. There was a noticeable difference. I would recommend that kit to anyone. Between that and making my own linkage rods for the Z bar with heim joints, it was a pretty good upgrade.

A pressure plate with 2200-2400 lbs of clamping force will be easy on you.

Thanks to turbohunter and Nightmist66 for comments on the bearing conversion.  I'll give it a try.

I had the weld-in bearing supports done by Mustang Steve and I am running the Centerforce Dual Friction. ( the new one) and it's very light. The full roller bearings made a HUGE difference in pedal effort, as did the Diaphragm dual friction.

This is the instructions. I am not a proficient welder so I took it over to his shop and had him do it. I think he charged me 65.00 labor, or somewhere in that neighborhood.  This isn't like the kit that Drake/NPD sell. I don't see the sealed ball bearings wearing out in my lifetime.
It's very smooth and positive feeling. I don't have the option of a hydraulic clutch because of what my vehicle is and I won't cut the firewall or drill into it.
Here is the link to the installation instructions.
