BBM 482 build
« on: October 01, 2019, 09:35:14 AM »
Since the 445 Maverick is on track to be completed over the winter (waiting for me to paint and assemble) I decided to gather some parts I have been collecting for the next stroker build and get them to the machine shop. Not really sure what power to expect.
This one is a” just because I want to” kind of build (I have several in mind). It consists mostly of impulse buys over the last year. It started after I had the 445 on Jays dyno and wanted more. Mostly just wanted a 427 based build and to use some of the cool FE power stuff that kept following me home. I am pretty certain a roller cam would be more capable but I have always wanted to do a SFT build and in my feeble mind I thought it suited a tunnel ram better. As per usual the motor is being built prior to having a vehicle  for it to go in to.

Mike has been known to frequent my shop, which is why a lot of parts seem to leave here with him LOL!  Mike, if fuel is not a big concern why not crank the compression up to 13:1 or so?  That engine sounds a lot like my 511" Drag Week engine, which made a bit over 700 HP with 12.5:1, and was street drivable on pump premium fuel.  I just put race gas in for the track.

Good stuff Mike.
Won’t lie, the 445 Maverick is still going to be the coolest thing ever.

Thanks Drew.

Jay, I think we will be in that compressions range. When I dropped the block off at TES first thing he said after looking at the block is "You need compression".

I hope you haven't committed to those valve sizes.  The intake valve job is really going to overlap onto the exhaust seat, and the clearance between those valves is going to be thinner than I would want.  2.220 and 1.680 are my personal limits for BBM valve sizes in currently available BBM heads.  If the chamber is not modified correctly, the 2.250 valve will kill the flow anyway. Just my opinions........ hundreds of BBM heads have been through here.

Blair, I have not committed to them . Jason who is porting the heads recommended we talk about smaller valves this afternoon. He is recommending 2.2 or 2.19 at this point but still a work in progress. Thanks for the input Blair. I believe he is in agreement about the large valve hindering flow. As is often the case what I think I want and what I need may differ. I may still use it but my cam choice is also being evaluated and will remain a solid flat tappet, input in that area is also welcome.

Nothing much cooler then a tunnel ram.

We talked about it while dynoing my current motor.  Of course "more cam" came around too.  I am curious as to if there is any HP in just the intake?  I still only turn it 6500.

Unless you already have the tunnel ram, then I don't think the difference between your tunnel wedge and a tunnel ram would be worth the cost involved.  JMO, but the TW is just way more cool looking for the older Ford FE vehicles.  For maximum effort, then the TR would definitely be the way to go, or Sheetmetal TR.  Joe-JDC

Kinda my thought.  Not like I have 75 HP hiding somewhere......beside my lack of camshaft and my limits on RPM.

Are the spring pressures on that going to be to much for shaft mounted rockers or at least close.

I was thinking that too T&D race rockers would be money well spent
