Erson rocker shaft height vs stock rocker shaft height
« on: May 09, 2011, 03:07:29 PM »
Are Erson rocker shafts height the same as stock or are they a bit taller to compensate for the lack of using the oil deflector?
I found an old thread that made me think Robb desiqned them to be used with deflectors but then found out they did not fit, but he did not mention if he compensated for the height or not.
Here is the thread I dug up:

I just measured a stock stand and one of my Erson setups, and found to my surprise that the Erson shafts are substantially higher than the stockers.  From the bottom of the stock stand to the bottom of the rocker shaft hole is 0.990", and the shafts are 0.840" in diameter, so from the bottom of the stand to the centerline of the shafts is 1.410".  The Ersons measure 1.265" from the bottom of the stand to the bottom of the rocker shaft hole, and the rocker shafts measure 0.698", so from the bottom of the Erson shafts to the centerline of the shafts is 1.614"!  That's a full two tenths of an inch, a lot thicker than any rocker shaft tin I've ever seen.  I would have guessed them to be at the same height, but obviously not...

Wow! Erson's are .204 higher. It would seem that much would mess with the valve train geometry.
And thanks for measuring, I never even thought about it when I put my engine together.
I too just thought it would be the same, then I got to thinking about using or not using the tins, one thing leads to another in hotrod dream land.

I have Pump Builders stuff and just from where the roller rides on the Valve,Edelbrock heads,Survival Stage X set up. The stands are to tall by about .030". My measurement was made by installing the tins under the stand and noting the roller moved the wrong way the amount I wanted it to move the other way. So my pattern is more outboard moving to center than outboard/center/inboard.

Still seems to work OK.
