Add the skinny hard-compound tires and you're more passenger than driver in that thing!  Those old Grand Prix drivers really had big cojones...

Like bringing a machine gun to a knife fight in 1936. 5 speed, 520 hp, and obviously brave drivers. I think the 37's or 38's were 600 hp.

I hope to go to Goodwood, maybe this July, and see these things in person.

Bonneville is a must!  I did it once, and will have to go again.  Where else can you stroll the pits, chat up the racers, and sit anywhere you want?  I was admiring a beautiful Mercedes 300SL that was going to make a run.  They had the car on stands and were adjusting the seat tracks for a taller driver - a certain gentleman named John Fitch!

The owner noticed that I was pretty skinny, so he called me over and handed me a cordless drill.  "Pop holes in the belly pan where the punch marks are."  You can imagine that my hands were shaking a bit as I was making holes in a million dollar car!

THAT is the Bonneville spirit.  Everybody is super cool.

I've been to Bonneville so Goodwood, LeMans, Monaco would all be other automotive events to see. Though I prefer drag races and just so happens the Santa Pod Ford race is the Sunday of the weekend of Goodwood . Perhaps Thursday to Saturday at Goodwood then Sunday to Santa Pod. Just need to sell some more spare parts.

Yes, and I got to say a brief hello to the man.  They were doing a special record attempt for the class in that 300SL Gullwing (170 mph if I recall), and they invited Mr. Fitch to get back behind the wheel.  How cool is that??  Guys like that are not too hard to find strolling the grounds at Bonneville.  Everybody's just a car guy.

My first trip to a drag strip was in '57---a spectator with my father, since I wasn't old enough to drive---and I was there, running a car, on opening night for Detroit Dragway in '59.

My first trip to an ECTA meeting, held at the time in Maxton, NC, was just like being in the pits in the '50s and early-mid 60s. Everybody very easy to deal with and a distinct sense of camaraderie. Pile your trunk stuff and your spare tire in one place and the guys on either side would be sure that none of it developed 'legs'. The guy who ran the concession stand on one occasion, when I had an alternator fail, came over and offered to let me plug in to his generator to be able to put a top-off in my battery when I was replacing the alt.

Land Speed is a very nice place to go.

I actually saw a "real" 300 SL.  One day in the early 70s when i came home
from school there was this strange car with a Mercedes star in the grill in
our yard. I understood it was old, probably slightly bathered and dirty, this
was in the winter. I thought it was gypsies only gypsies drove old Mercedes in those days ;D
It was a guy that was in to Model-Ts and such  that was visiting my father
I asked my father about in later years and he said it was just a used sportscar in
those days, impractical and expensive to repair. You probably had to pay money
to trade it for a Volvo Amazon :o I have seen them in museums in later years
But this was a daily driver 8)
Remember when he opened the gullwing door and flipped down the steering wheel
and the sound of the high perf six cyl when he left. It was like i had seen a UFO
