428 / 406 Clone Dyno Results
« on: September 21, 2012, 08:08:49 AM »
This is sort of a plain vanilla build to you guys, but it turned out well so I thought I would share.  It is a 428 built to look a little old school like a 406.  Ford Tripower setup and Comp 282S cam.  I thought the tripower would hold it back, but I think 415 BHP & 500 TQ is pretty stout!  I built this engine to sell, since the project I collected the parts for is gone, but now I'm not so sure.

I dig it!  Can we get some more info about the components?  What heads, valve sizes, porting, etc?

It is a .060 over PI block, TRW flat tops, about 9.8:1 CR (the deck came out around .030 which is not what I wanted but I didn't have it decked to correct it).  The heads are C8AE-H with CJ valves and a good valve job but no other performance work (except drilled for 16 bolt manifolds).  The Tripower came to me as a box of parts and I put a kit in the carbs and installed the original/stock jets and PV and it worked out fine.  The port match looked pretty good to me so I left it alone.  I am running 1/2" phenolic spacers under the carbs to get clearance to the Mallory Unilite with the stock air cleaner.  The cam is advanced about 1-1/2 degrees and we ran 33-1/2 degrees total advance.

What am I forgetting..??  I think that's it.

Wow, those are great torque numbers!  The intake is definitely hurting the engine on the top end, but what a stump puller...

Jay - we did break-in on just the center carb.  After cam break-in, we did some light pulls to seat the rings, and on just the 2-bbl carb it flashed over 400 lb.-ft. of torque as soon as we loaded it.  We both just looked at each other; we knew this thing was going to put up some good torque numbers!  ;D

That torque curve is nearly identical to my 468s........I'm  thinking  those smaller  ports in C8AE-H have higher velocity making more low and mid range power.
I have a set of those on a mystery engine I have.........maybe worth a try sometime.

That engine looks great, by the way.
