428 Thermostat size
« on: November 01, 2018, 03:28:55 PM »
I am not sure what part number to get for the larger thermostat...I have 428 with a 427 Eldebrock intake...and the thermostat housing from NPD 8575-2.  The thermostat I had fit the housing...but way too small for the intake....I installed without a thermostat but suspect I need to install one before I run the engine (really?)...what is the correct part number..and why did it fit the housing and not the intake...do I have the wrong housing?  Please assist.

you have the wrong housing (small t-stat), you need the big housing.
happens to be one for sale in the classifieds, you can see the difference, they have both

Thanks...those are a bit abused...I will keep looking for a good condition...

BTW, I see the threaded hole is for the dist vacuum advance...is that essential to use that part or direct to the carb tube on the right side...

Second, where does the water temp sensor go...direct to intake....???not sure...

Scott Drake has new housings, with or without side hole. they are re-pops built authorized by Ford
put the temp sender in the hole behind the distributor.
the threaded hole is for temp controlled ported vacuum, not for the distributor.
get distributor vacuum from metering block on carb

That threaded hole can be used for a vacuum switch. Ported vacuum works normally but if your engine runs hot at idle the switch changes to manufold vacuum. This advances the timing, speeds up the engine thus cooling off.

Was there ever a large thermostat housing made with the port?
