Drag Week 2018 is underway.
« on: September 10, 2018, 10:32:15 AM »
After a brief delay for fog this morning, Hot Rod drag Week got underway about 8:30 am Eastern time today. There is a free live video feed again this year, a few ways to access it, including the Hot Rod website link below.

Scott Miller already ran with his FE powered '68 Cougar with a 9.188 @ 145 pass. Hemi Joel made a pass, looks like he had some issues, which is surprising since the test passes have been good, not sure what the issue is yet. I have not seen Doug run the Galaxie yet.

Lots of good runs so far, including a few 7's and at least one in the 6's from Tom Bailey in the Unlimited class.

Richie Crampton is back with the '57 Wagon, this year with a billet alcohol funny car engine with water jackets added, but they are just making exhibition passes since they didn't get their support truck out of the pits in time this morning, sounds like they still had work to do. But they have made a pass already.

Doug S. just ran with the '65 Galaxie, turned 18.229 @ 74.60. Joel got a second pass in during the first session and ran a much better 10.22 ET, although I think I've seen at least 3 cars in his Hot Rod class who ran quicker this morning, so we will have to see if they are satisfied with that today.

They announced this morning that there are 375 cars this year that went through registration yesterday, so again, anyone that showed up were able to get in and participate.

After a brief bit of sunshine, the skies are looking a little threatening right now, hopefully the rain holds off.

Hot Rod just called that they are done for the day at the track due to rain  :'( Hopefully everyone makes the drive to South Carolina in the rain safe this afternoon.

Racing scheduled for 8am Eastern time tomorrow as of right now.

Jack ran his cougar, not his mustang.

Joel’s first run sounded like the carbs were sloshed, or maybe a fuel pressure issue.
His second run sounded cleaner.
I took a great video of Joel’s second run.

Typical Georgia weather. I left at 2pm as rain was certain. Plus I hadn’t heard from work and
The possibility of leaving for the airport at 2am was possible (now 4pm)
Only class left was the daily driver folk.

Jack wasn't happy when he dynoed the motor he put together, so he brought his Cougar.

Scott ran a 9.18 and is leading his class by .3 seconds. Way to go Scott!!

Joel ran a 10.16 in testing on Sunday. He was set for his first run on Monday, he had already done his burnout, when they had a break on the track and Joel had to shut it off for a minute. He bumped the fuel pump switch off when he shut it off and didn't realize it.

The air was hot and very humid, so it was a power killing day. No way were Scott and Joel going to run the times that they wanted.

Me and my son were watching the racing all day when I decided to finally get in line kinda late. As soon as I ran and got back to the pit, it started to rain and then cut loose with a downpour. I screwed up when I was thrashing on the valvetrain Thursday night and Friday morning. I had most of the top end of the engine apart and completely forgot about the kickdown rod when I put everything back together. I left without putting it on and didn't realize it till I was half way to Atlanta. I knew that was going to really screw things up, and sure enough, when I shifted into second, it only held for about 1 second before shifting into 3rd. That kept me from getting into the 10s...lol  When I realized I had forgotten my rod, I was messing around and tried the shifting into Drive, then back to low thing, but it didn't work on my transmission, it went straight back to 1st. That wasn't good, and there wasn't a darn thing I could do about it. Mine is a 'large case' COM trans, so I don't know if there's a difference between that and the medium case that Alan had or what the deal is. Stupid mistake on my part. There was zero chance of running a respectable time (for a bone stock engine) without being able to hold 2nd gear. Also, it was still running rich and pushing black smoke from the secondaries, but I don't have any different jets for the Autolite carb, so I can't change them. This carb has different jets than a Holley, so I don't know where to even find any. I have a handful, but there are only 2 sizes that I have, one for the primaries and one for the secondaries.

Thanks for the update Doug. Here's a link to the Hot Rod website for day 1 results:

https://www.hotrod.com/articles/hot-rod-drag-week-official-results-day-1/

Scott Miller is indeed leading his class, wishing him luck to continue there.

Joel is sitting 4th in the Hot Rod class, close to the leaders.

Doug, is there anyway you can wire the kickdown arm engaged when you get to the track?

Right now people at the track are reporting it's dry and they should be racing this morning. Reports from last night were that one participant with a '65 Galaxie had a tire blow out and wound up in the ditch with his trailer upside down. Turned out it was a green Galaxie. Very glad it wasn't Doug, but certainly sad news for that person. Sounds like they were not injured. At least one other participant in the ditch from driving in the rain also, one of the Gebhart Mopar clan. They were not injured either.

Of course right now hurricane Florence is the big wild card. Mandatory evacuations on the coast mean some roadways are set to run with all lanes going away from the coast, so that may effect the Hot Rod planned routes each day.

Drew, we're talking about Minnesotans here, they're basically Canadians with permanent green cards, so anything above freezing is hot ;D ;)

That really sucks about the green Galaxie, but it was a '66, not a '65. It was the only other Galaxie there. I talked to those 2 for a while and it turned out they only live 20 minutes from me in Ohio. It was a father/son team, with the son driving.

Kevin, I'm home now. Here's the story; my Son lives on the NC coast, right where Hurricane Florence is slated to hit. They were having mandatory evacuations, so he had to leave. He has a family with 2 boys, so he made the right call. I had talked to Keith, the race director, and he was going to allow Randy to follow me in his truck, in case he had to leave. Things took a turn for the worse as far as Florence was concerned, so that's when he made the decision to head home. Initial plans were that this years Drag Week would be my son, my wife and me. That was the major driving incentive to get the Galaxie going. Even though she put in for the vacation MONTHS ago, they would not let her have the whole week off, so she was going to drive down on Wednesday to meet us at Bristol, and just tag along, but at a distance. I took off by myself yesterday after the days events and was driving to the first check point. The rain was so horrible that I couldn't see the road, and that was with good wipers! I pulled off and let it subside, then hit the road again. Again, the rain hit and I had to pull off again.

Sitting in a gas station parking lot, and knowing what was coming with the hurricane, I did not want my wife making the 9-10 hour trip down, only to most likely be washed out the last 2-3 days. I gave it much thought and decided that the wise thing to do would be to just call it a successful trip with the car and head home. I waited for the rain to let up and headed back. I got home at 3:45 am today. It was actually a beautiful trip through the Smokey Mountain Bi-way, and the car ran perfect all the way home. Even though I'm bummed that I did not complete Drag Week, I'm very happy with how the car performed (on the highway, not the track). I have a few leaks to take care of (I also had an axle seal that started leaking and saturated one of my rear brakes), but I also found that I have a rock solid car that could easily go cross country without so much as a grunt, fully loaded. And I now have another FE added to my driving stable, with another to come here shortly, but that's another story.

On a side note, my son got home, but there is no gas to be found anywhere, so he's not even sure how they're going to evacuate. Right now, he's my major concern.

Thanks for the update Doug, Hoping that your son & family make it safe through the hurricane. that explains why I didn't see you run this morning on the live feed.

Hot Rod just made the announcement today that racing is still on for Charlotte N.C. tomorrow, but competitors don't need to follow the official Drag Week route or stop at any checkpoints today. They are advising participants today just to take the most direct route.

Scott Miller ran 9.129 @ 146. Jack Miller ran 12.518 in his Cougar.

Joel ran 10.43 in the Coupe, but he still has people in his class running quicker. It looked like maybe he spun on his pass. No word yet from Jeff if they are staying to try another pass or have hit the road.

Hoping he makes it through the week. If he keeps this up, he'll have his 2nd win! As far as I could see, there were only 3 FEs at this years DW; Scott, his dad Jack and me.

That's cool, I hope they come back towards the midwest next year.  The route this year was one reason I elected not to go.  Based on the hurricane, it looks like I picked the right year to skip...

Doug, IMO it's quite an achievement to drive there and back with a 50+ year old car and not have any major embarrassments!  It's likely the right decision to head back home early this time due to Florence.  Hope your son managed to find gas somewhere and is able to follow instructions from the authorities.

Bruce, except for the leaks, which I'll fix here soon, including all new seals and gaskets on the rear, the car was flawless while driving. I would kid with my son saying "Well, I hope it starts this time", because you literally just have to bump and release the key and it instantly goes to a perfect idle every single time. Discounting the odd ones, and depending on whether I was steady cruising, climbing the mountains or coming down them, it averaged anywhere from 13.4 to 17.8 mpg, with the 13.4 including my pass at the track. Pretty darn good if you ask me! Removing the 2 highest produced a total trip average of 15.1 mpg, and that was loaded to the gills!

Sorry for all the posts, but thought you guys would find some of this stuff interesting.
This is Richie Kramptons '57 wagon. This was one of the most ingenious set-ups I've ever seen. It makes me think that the 'unrealistic' blower set-up in Mad Max is only one brainstorm from becoming reality. I'm thinking something like an AC clutch set-up would work. I'm not giving it away, you'll have to look at the pictures to figure it out.

Post away Doug, the pictures are great. Frieburger & Lohnes gave away the secret of Richie Crampton's '57 on the live feed, so I won't spoil it, but pretty ingenious. Word today is they had to take it back to a shop for some work, but they're planning on coming back and making the drive tomorrow. Funny Car driver Jonnie Lindberg is the person driving it this year, and supposedly that's the engine from his NHRA funny car.

The white Barracuda was built by and belongs to Jim Forbes, aka "Squirel", who has driven his red Nova blown gasser the last few years, and has won his class. Along with running the Nova on Drag Week, he drove it to the event at least twice from his home in Arizona, once on purpose, and once when his tow rig broke down and he just unloaded the car and drove it the rest of the way to Drag Week & back.

That was my thought too. Dump the belt for street/highway driving and run solely off the TB. Adding the belt back on for the drags would not tale long. Very ingenious!

Jim and I talked about that experience of his truck breaking down when I told him I drove from Ohio. He seemed like a genuinely nice and friendly guy. He's an engineer, and you could tell by how well thought out and clean his car was.

Mr Brunson, yes, they pull the belt when driving on the street. Lots more going on there also to make it work. Kevin is right, it's a billet block engine from his Funny Car, converted for water cooling. If they had the bugs worked out, it obviously would have been a top contender in his class OR Unlimited.

Drew, the Swede and Aussie experience is part of Drag Week..lol  Yes, they party most of the night, all week long.

Marc, the Galaxie is just gonna remain a cruiser that we can take on camping and backpacking trips. I like traveling and camping old style, with a tent, cooking out, no electric etc, so the car will fit that bill perfectly. My Mach is my main Drag Week car, and I have plans for some major changes to it over the next 2-3 years. I've mentioned them a time or two, so if you weren't paying attention, that's your fault ;)

Scott ran a 9.29 just a bit ago to maintain his lead in Street Race Big Block NA. Not as fast as he's ran the prior 2 days, but enough to keep a decent lead. Good luck to him the rest of the week!

Doug What rear gear do you have ? i get around 15-16
average to, on my Galaxie  with 2.82 or 2.72 dont remember
exactly . 255-70 15 tires

Heo, I had to go check because I've never even looked. It has 3.00 gears and I have 215-75/15 tires. Probably could have gone a bit bigger, but it seems to be a decent combo for highway driving.

Yes, good to see Scott Miller making nice clean passes.

Tuesday Joel ran a 10.43 first session in the Coupe, then came back for another pass in the all run session, but only ran 10.544, so no improvement.

This morning Joel ran 10.175 @ 137, closer to what he ran on his better test passes last weekend. He's still in 4th place in his class, the leaders are running well too, but Joel seems to have to highest mph.

The checkpoint today is Pat Musi's race shop, which is having an open house for the Drag Week participants. A pretty cool stop. Hot Rod waived having to follow the official route again after the first checkpoint, due to the hurricane. Participants had to follow the directions to the first stop. People are reporting random gas stations out of gas, but are still finding places with fuel.

Jonnie Lindberg ran his first 6 with the '57 today on his second exhibition pass.

The amazing thing with Scott’s engine is how tame it sounds.
A wild guess is that it has to be pushing 900hp.

Drew, you would be almost exactly right on the HP guess. And yes, you'd never guess just by listening to it. Blair has done an outstanding job on that engine and Scott and his dad and crew are very adept at getting it to hook. He's been making one pass and done, just like last year. That says a LOT about the car and their abilities!

Gas stations farther east are pretty much out of any fuel, so the DW guys are pretty lucky to find fuel at all.

Jonnie and Richie are still slowly ramping up the Top Fuel Wagon..lol  With his speed over 200 mph today, and still launching softly, that car would pretty much dominate the entire DW field if it were completely sorted out and the wick turned up!

Good luck to Joel, he's got some stiff competition in his class.

Yes, I hear that the "feud" between me and Freiburger got mentioned on the live feed LOL!  There is no feud of course, Freiburger is a really nice guy and I like talking to him.  He gives me a lot of crap, but I give it right back to him; I've known him since Drag Week 2005, where he told me that my Mach 1 was his all-time favorite car.  It's good to see him having success with RoadKill, because he is a REAL car guy, not just a writer or TV personality.  I sure hope he enters Drag Week with a car at some point; I would purely love to see him broken down on the side of the road  ;D ;D

He talked about you for about 20+ seconds when Scott ran, since he was running the "extinct" engine. He even called you an "FE expert". Obviously some respect there. He really liked my car last year and stopped to talk to me and look the car over, so I think he's a closet Ford fan..lol

Scott ran a 9.37 a little while ago. Just a guess, but I'm betting he'll call it a day and head back to Atlanta for the final day. That was good enough for him to maintain his lead by a couple tenths. He'll just need to make one decent pass in Atlanta to take home the trophy. Good luck to him!

The live video feed went down for me a while ago, not sure what the issue is, or if it's just my device. I'll have to try and catch the replay. In the mean time here's some random pictures from the internet.

Dale Gebhart, Mopar Billy's brother and long time Drag Week participant with his brothers and family ran off the road last night in the mountains and hit a rock with his beautiful '70 Duster. He was sitting 7th in the Unlimited class with a 8.93 average and some solid passes. Sad to see. Road accidents are always a very real possibility on Drag Week and there have been a few this year.

Kevin, the Live Feed worked fine all day as far as I could see, must have been your device.

Sad to see that about Dales car. I was a little leery about the downhill curves on wet roads in the mountains, but it looks like his roads were dry. Several guys said they had problems with trailers, that had no brakes, wanting to push their cars. Some of those trailers are heavy, so I can easily see that happening. That very well may have been what happened here.

Yes, I think so. I think I got it fixed now for tomorrow.

Lea Ochs '78 Fairmont wagon ( I don't think it's Ford powered ), left lane, launched the fiberglass hood over the grandstands Tuesday on a 8.23 @ 151 pass. There was some other video that showed it even better.

Leas car was LS powered. I know that's a shocker, but it's true :P
Finnegan blew out his rear window on Monday, in the same fashion as Lea. He also ran a 9.00 yesterday, his quickest time ever. Watching him shift that thing is entertaining to say the least.

Joe, Finnegans run was a 9.008 yesterday. They were making a big deal because he ALMOST made the 8's. Joel was a little slower today, don't recall his exact time, but everyone was running a bit slower today because of the DA.

I missed a bunch of the live feed today, but Joel texted tonight, and Hot Rod has the Day 4 results online - Joel turned in a 10.629 @ 111 slip today, I also saw him run a 12.239. He texted that the clutch was slipping today, the street drives are taking a toll on the race clutch. He's going to try an adjustment and hope he can get at least one more good run. He's still sitting in 4th place. Joel & Jeff did make the ride today to the hotel without issue, so it's just one more run to the track.

Like Doug noted, the actual altitude and the Density Altitude really slowed some of the competitors today at Bristol. Some were able to turn up the boost, or maybe feed a bit more nitrous, and ran pretty close to their previous et's, so a few of the standings in the competitive classes moved a bit.

Tom Bailey is still holding on to the top spot in Unlimited and overall quickest ( 6.8815 average ), but he slowed a bunch today and I didn't see the pass, so I don't know if he's wounded or not. Both Bryant Goldstone ( 6.989 ) and last years winner David Schroeder ( 7.0241 ) are very close.

The cut off for the quickest 32 in the Street Machine Eliminator class really was lowered this year. I think the cut off last year was 11.05, right now this year ( with one day to go ) it's 10.75. The quickest 32 in that class run a bracket race to determine the class winner, and the bar keeps moving faster each year. 10.00 is the quickest you are allowed to run in that class.

Kevin, you are going to need seventeen stages of nitrous to get that Lincoln into the bracket race next year.

I saw a bit this morning before work and am watching the replay now. Handy that you can fast forward past oil downs. When I left this morning Tom Bailey was in the burnout box waiting for ten minutes or more and I never got to see his run.

Link:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-UUPBWnIBI

The Jonnie Linberg/Richie Crampton Top Alky powered Chev wagon is wild. Amazing that engine can last more than ten minutes of street driving. Aren't the valve springs something like 500lbs on the seat and 1200+ open? It sounds like the engine is the one from the #2 qualified TAFC that Leah Pritchett's husband ran at Indy a week ago.

That black 55 Chev with the blown 460 Ford is trying to make up for the dozens of damned LS swapped Fords.

Doug instead of 2 65 Galaxies with 390's how about one Galaxie with two 390's? That ought to pick ET up to a less embarrassing level.  :P   I think they could be mounted end to end with some minor firewall hammering and you could just unhook one for the street drives to maintain gas mileage.  8)

Scott's car is amazingly fast. In a class where there is no cube limit on big blocks the FE should be at a real disadvantage, obviously it isn't.
I'd love to know what's inside that engine!

I wasn't even going to do a burnout because I figured only one wheel would spin, so I just rolled through the water and hit the gas to try and dry off the right tire. My son told me both tires spun. I was amazed..lol I couldn't foot brake it because with the drum brakes, I knew it'd push right through the beams, so I just waited and hit the gas. It launched about as hard as a fat turtle walking uphill :P

A funny story about tech, the guy was looking over my car and said "you don't have a driveshaft loop", I said "I know, the car won't be fast enough to need one". He replied that NHRA requires one with slicks, I told him again that I won't be fast enough to need one. He informed me that he'd have to limit me to a 13.99 et, I said Noooo problem ;D

Of course my horns worked on the way down, but at tech they were back to warbling, trying to clear their throats. I kept hitting the horn ring trying to get them to make a sound when somebody else honked their horn. I immediately said "there, did you hear it?" They laughed, I laughed, my son laughed, it was a good time..lol I kept trying the horns when my son mentioned that they were trying to work, so the tech guy listened and heard the faint pathetic sound of it warbling and said "I heard it....passed"  ;D  Always lots of good stories from Drag Week, even if it was only one day for me.

As far as FE's go, Scott was the only one with ANY shot at taking a trophy before it even started. Yes, it's amazingly fast for what the car is, because the Street Race class is the most restricted of any class there. No fiberglass panels allowed except for the hood and bumpers. No body alterations allowed, of any kind. Must use stock type suspensions etc. Basically the only alteration that's allowed are mini tubs that don't intrude on the factory frame rail locations. Like I said before, it's a testament to Blairs engine and the Millers ability to get it to hook. I saw and learned a few details about the engine when I visited Blair, but I won't give them away.

I saw Scott run a 9.34 @ 149 this morning so he should have wrapped up his class win.

Jim Kitchen with his '86 T-Bird was solidly into the fastest 32 of Street Machine Eliminator as of last night, I missed his run this morning, but assuming he's still in he has a shot at winning the bracket race.

Although not FE powered, Dan Saitz looks to have wrapped up another win in Modified Power Adder with his turbo small block Ford powered '88 Mustang. In an event overrun with LS powered late model Mustangs & Fairmonts it's cool to see someone dominate with a Ford powered one.

There are quite a few other nice or interesting Fords again this year. There are a pair of I believe brothers, Chris and Gary Salkeld, running a '65 Falcon in B/Gasser and a '64 Fairlane in A/Gasser. The late model Mustang with the Boss 429 is back and running 7's. I've seen a '70 Cougar, no idea what it's powered by, but I'd guess if FE we'd know.

Backed up the live feed and just saw Scotts 9.34. Yep, that's enough to secure him the win as the next guy has only managed bests of 9.4+. Congrats to Scott and the crew!! That's TWO wins in a row! What an awesome job.

I don't think that Cougar is FE powered. I didn't see any others there except for Scott and Jack, which is pretty sad.

Watch it, Chilly, that's what got me started, when they had the tracks all within 1 1/2 hours of me.
But man, I don't think they could have picked worse spots. All on the coast, all surrounded by major cities like Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and the traffic of New Jersey. That does not appeal to me at all! Next to LA and San Diego, that has to be some of the worst traffic areas in the country.

It is the most fun you will ever have with your car while simultaneously being tortured for a week lol. Because the event does move around a person really should take advantage if it's close.

Two things I always say - If you aren't sure your car will be done, or you may not be able to get the time off, at least get on the waiting list. So far no one has who has shown up for registration and was on the waiting list has ever been turned away. And being on the waiting list means not paying until you know you're in. They started with about 375 cars this year, with a planned limit of 400, so there was still room. Although the event sells out in about 5 minutes each year, the attrition of hopefuls is massive as Drag Week draws closer.  Also, don't worry about being too slow, I guarantee there will be slower vehicles even if you show up with something 391 FT powered ( that would be cool though ). Get on getting ready right away though, the amount of people still thrashing at the last minute seems to be a Drag Week tradition, Just ask Doug  :D

I've been to the tracks listed, and living in the area I may be a bit numb to the East Coast drawbacks.  You're right though, there is potential to be in some traffic.  However, if they don't force you to take the normal interstate 95 and beltways, those tracks are accessible by decent secondary roads.

VA Motorsports Park is well South of town, easy to get to and Richmond is a small easy to navigate town.

Cecil County is well East of the DC/Baltimore mess but could be a bit hairy getting around there from a traffic perspective if they send you on a stupid route.  If it takes you up 301, to 40 it's not too bad.

ATCO I have no clue.  Lived in NJ when I was a kid but avoid it like the plague.

Budd's Creek - Again if they take you down 301 it wouldn't be too bad, that area is well south of DC congestion.

I'll have to read up on rules, do you have to travel during prescribed hours or can you wait out rush hours and such?

May be looking at this with rose colored glasses but tough to pass up being that it begins/ends 40mi from my house.

Thanks for the advice.  I've done two rebuilds on the car in the last three years (5spd conversion and rebuilt 390 this winter) so I was actually planning to leave it alone next year, so knock on wood it wouldn't need any major work to be ready.

Took the day off next Friday to finally take it to the track, no idea what it'll run, but it's not anywhere close to fast so it'd just be for the experience of going.  I'm not a car show guy but something like this appeals to me.  I've drag raced a bit but sitting around all day to make two passes got old, this makes more sense to me.

You can travel any hours that you want, as long as you make the track the next day and get a run in by the end of the day. Not trying to talk you out of it, but there will be long wait lines in the staging lanes. The plus side is you can just walk around and look at cars and watch racing before and after you race. You can race early and enjoy the rest of the day, or race late and enjoy the early part. The experience is worth it, trust me. You'll meet people and make friends that make you want to go back the next year. And yes, you won't need a trailer with your car, just keep it basic and you'll have fun.

Thanks for the sharing your thoughts, Doug.  I'll look into it, as stated it's never going to be easier to do something like this, I can easily stay at my house a couple nights when it's at VMP.  I'd be OK with a wait in the staging lanes for something like this, just never understood 4hrs to get one run in when I went to VMP on a standard test and tune night, and paid 40bucks for the experience.

This track selection has me wondering about signing up.....I have relatives that live on the eastern shore of Maryland that I'd like to see anyhow. I did a project for work that was in Middleburg Virginia. While I was living out there I went and followed the 422 allstars guys around at a few different events, their circuit is this same chunk of tracks. I liked all of the tracks, each for a different reason. I believe Cecil County is the track that folks go to try and run a number. The track is slightly downhill.

I'm with Chilly, knowing the area a bit, there's definitely back routes and certain drive times that make the area not so bad to manage for traffic.

The only problem for me, getting the car done!

You need to do the set route and checkpoints Hot Rod puts out each day, but there are no prescribed times. As long as you get to the next track each day before they close the staging lanes you're good. There are a few strategies people employ, some try to do just one pass right away in the morning and get on the road right away, others run later at night. No reason you can't take a break for dinner or maintenance and sit out traffic for a while either. Of course best laid plans...

You can get off the official route too if needed, either for parts runs, repairs, etc., or to get to where you're staying, as long as you get back on the official route at the same place again. So if home is close no reason you can't stay there, just as long as you travel the official route.

Hot Rod officially announced the Drag Week 2019 tracks today. Planning for Drag Week 2019 starts today! Only 51 short weeks to get ready.

That's about a 22 hr drive for me to get to the starting point. I'll have to give it some thought. Rocky Mountain Race Week sounds like a better option for me next year. Along with being a lot closer it will most likely be less congested too, traffic-wise.

Had a great Dragweek 2018. As always could not of done it without my dad, Jack Miller. Not one issue with the cougar. 90% of the time the engine ran at 180 and the tranny at 165. Climbing the mountains from NC to VA the engine max’d at 200 and the tranny at 180. We did try a different cam this year but it didn’t respond quite like we hoped, maybe the springs are a little week or maybe this cam wants more compression to wake up, but I’m sure Blair and my dad will be coming up with a plan. The biggest issue I need to iron out is how to make this car leave off the trans break. It just won’t do it. It will only leave off idle. I’ve got to figure out the leaf spring/cal track combo. Anyways, very happy for the win at Dragweek.

Congratulations, Scott. Another great year for you guys. I noticed you still weren't using the trans break, but still pulling a heck-of-a ET just leaving off idle! Hopefully you'll get some help getting that brake figured out without blowing the tires off. Has to be some decent ET left there when you do.

Drag week 2018 was like a cross between a trip to Disneyland and the Baton death march.

Despite the extreme heat at times, it was a great drag week for me, finally getting the HemiCoupe where it belongs.  The car performed very well for being new and mostly unproven. Zero breakdowns. The only repair was a blown header gasket, an easy fix for my able Trunk Monkey. I came in 4th in the Hot Rod class. There was .4 seconds separating me from the winner, so it was a close race. There is a lot more in the car, I have a good to-do list for both on track and off. I just booked the rooms for 2019!

Congrats to TOm Bailey for the hard earned wins, congrats to all who won their class, and to all who finished! And thanks to Jeff (Jerico GTX for being a Trunk Monk extraordinaire!

Sheesh, rooms are already sold out!!!  Quick look around there are cheap options near the tracks so shouldn't be too big a deal to get rooms.  Think I'll start another thread for 2019 prep...at the pace I get projects done I'll have to start now to be ready :)

One of the cool things about Drag Week is it draws many international participants and their cars. There was a group from the country of Estonia this year with a 1972 Ford Taunus. Pretty neat looking little car with twin turbo'd small block Ford power. They ran solid, fairly consistent, 8's all week, finishing in 5th place in the Unlimited class with a 8.747 @ 161 average. Fantastic results for their first time on Drag Week. Here's some pictures from their Facebook page and the internet.

I've been watching a bunch of videos on Youtube from the last couple years, agree there are a lot of interesting combos, not a sea of early Camaros and Fox bodies as you see at the track normally.  Scary how many 7-8sec combos are running.

Interesting little car, it's like a Torino met an early Mustang, met a 70s Capri....

That was a really neat car, and laid out really well. I was shocked to see it was Ford powered, which seems to be more and more of a rarity with all the LS crap out there. For them to hang with the Unlimited cars, with a small block, was really an amazing feat!

The Gebhart brothers keep track of a lot of Drag Week stats each year, putting out a list of each participant's overall quickest runs and averages in the event's history. They also keep track of the number of entries & finishers, here are the entry & finishing numbers by the years and a graph another Dragweekers Facebook member put together. Although the percentage of finishers has stayed somewhat steady, it's important to note how much quicker the cars have tended to get over the years. Also to note for this year is that there were a few participants who had to drop out due to the hurricane.

This^^
If you go back and look at winning times through the years, it really is amazing how much faster they've become. Most of the early cars wouldn't even be competitive today. I know I'll never be in contention for a trophy, but it's still fun to do. And it makes Scott and Jacks Cougar even more impressive when you consider that, besides the sheetmetal intake and fiberglass hood, there is nothing fancy about his car; stock body, leaf springs and 2 carburetors, and he's less than 2 tenths from the 8's! But it kind of sucks when everybody tends to gloss over 10 second street cars, when that used to be unheard of.

Right, I won in Scott's class in 2005, with less restrictive rules, and averaged 10.69 over the week.  I won in Modified NA with my Galaxie in 2009 averaging 9.52 (IIRC).  BB/NA is now a 9 flat class, and you'd better be running 8.50s in Modified NA if the fast cars show up for the event...
