1964 FE Engine color
« on: June 13, 2018, 06:04:21 PM »
Does anyone know were the 1964 FE Blocks Ford Blue or were they painted black?  For some reason, I am thinking black.  I don''t want the engine bay filled with a Ford Blue FE motor in my 1964 Fairlane, if Ford was painting them black

I'm pretty sure the 390 is black block and heads with gold valve covers.
Not sure on air cleaner, but I would guess gold also.

Black with gold covers and air cleaner.  There are some pictures of a really nice correct car here:

A careful study of failure will yield the ingredients for success.

Nice car! Yes the block-heads-intake-oilpan-frontcover-waterpump was black 1959-1965. Probably the exhaust manifolds too but that burned off right away.
IIRC all FoMoCo engines had black iron 1959-1965
Exceptions: The 144cid was all blue, and the 292cid truck was red iron.

Valve color / air cleaner colors varied by year, engine, and model.
The gold on the car for sale LOOKS a little dark but could just be the pictures. IIRC the 63-64 Ford 390/300 was castillion gold, about 1/3 silver, 2/3 gold.
On the other hand, the 390/375 hipo and 406 and 289-4bbl Mustangs were a darker gold, more like the shade in the link, at least as it comes out on my laptop. I've sprayed plenty of them with just "VHT Gold" even though its not exactly the right shade.

Yeah, I used the vht gold, it isn't right, but it looks good.  The kinda person that would walk up to your car to tell ya the valve covers are the wrong color really won't be much of a person to talk to anyway.

I used VHT Gm satin black for the rest.  My engine in the picture has an aluminum water pump and heads as well, but I like understated in colors.

My '64 427 had a black engine with chrome sheet metal on the top. The 8V air cleaner and intake manifold were as-cast aluminum.

You bought that new right?
The black in the engine compartment, inner fenders, etc what black was they?
On my 64 they are now some kind of satinblack but under that they are more
shiny .So my question was the innerfenders regular Gloss black like a ordinary
topcoat on the outside of a car or? And the firewall, bodycolour or black?

Anyone who's interested in resto parts for '63-'64 Galaxies should contact Bud Potter at:
https://www.budsclassiccars.com/

He specializes in only these 2 years and has almost everything in stock, including some of the original paints and dyes.  Sometime back he bought all the inventory from Greg Donahue who founded the business as Greg Donahue Collector Car Restorations and ran it for about 40 years.

Black through the end of '65 production. The engine color changed to "Ford blue" for the '66 model run.

Heo, I believe my firewall was body color (Wimbledon White) but I wouldn't swear to it. All the add-on inner sheet-metal was certainly not gloss black but not a full satin either. Somewhere in between, I believe. And yes, I did buy it new. Got it in the first part of February in '64.

Under the satinpaint, that you can scrape of with the nail my add-ons are like that....
kind of..piano black. And i have a NOS battery hold down clamp thats like that
Mayby like Nitro Cellulosa thats not polished.
Firewall is satin with no traces of shiny paint underneat no primer either  ???
Have to dig in to that this winter
