So we did a little testing last night.....
« on: April 14, 2018, 11:59:51 AM »
with Grizzle's new ride, at the local 1/8 mile track.  New car, new engine, etc.   All went well, but the converter turned out to be waaaay too loose.  A good converter slips 4-5% in high gear, at the most.  We had the converter built with a 5800-6000 flash in mind.  Turned out  to flash 6950, and had 18% slip in high gear.  We will have to use a 9" converter like the 385 boys employ.  This ragged FE just drove through the 8" that was tighter than my usual go-to nostalgia piece.  With the new car quirks and the wrong converter, it did manage a 1.16 in 60', leaving at only 3000, and it went 5.30 at 130 mph.  With the converter that loose, it was in high gear right past the tree.  We were mid 11's air/fuel, so some in-car tuning is going to be needed once we change the converter.  I see 1.10 60' coming, high 4's eighth mile, and 7's in the quarter, when it all shakes out.  2800 lbs.  Stay tuned......

520 inch BP FE.  Two 4150 carbs inline, on a billet tunnel ram.  .800 lift, my High Riser Race Pro Ports, 5-stage dry sump.  C4 from Joel.  Tim Lyons did the chassis, and it is top-shelf.

I hope it is. Pretty awesome for a bad convertor (aren't they all?) and first try.

Car should be at Beaver. Hoping to get another converter and run it again first, but it may not get there. I think we would probably try it Friday at Beaver if no home test is doable.

Testing went well good job, after seeing pictures during build, reading Tim Lyons article on the build using all top shelf parts and getting under or at 2600 lbs with driver, plus the FE you spoke of in November I knew that thing would be fast, hope you get the converter back in time for some more testing! Again great job Vernon, Blair, and Tim Lyons Chassis shop...........Al

Sounds like a brutal piece.. I'm sending my best guys (please don't  hold that against me) to Beaver to check this and a whole lot else out. Can't wait for the reports.

Blair, that is a nasty sounding set up and the car looks great ! I only wish I could see it run at Beaver this year...I really hate to miss Vernon's Dad's hocks cook'n in the pot !!
I'd love to see you guys run against Spahn's '58 with it's new engine....I hope you get it all dialed in to run at Beaver and best of luck to you and Vernon.

Thanks Red.......we ran it again this afternoon.  Converter is not here yet, but I tuned the carbs in and it went 1.12 in 60' and went 5.23 in the 1/8 mile.  With a little more power tuned into it, the converter is now slipping at 20% at the 1/8 mile mark.  We are hoping to get a tighter piece next week........well, that may not have come out exactly right.....lol.  Tighter converter....  This is a 4 second/7 second car when the bugs are all worked out.  It is fun to see progress......

The obvious solution is to abandon the slushbox and get a proper transmission and a clutch.... then 7's are no problem.  :-*

Still experimenting with tires, gearing, and four-link settings.  We cured the converter issues by going to a 9" unit.  It is flashing 6500 now, which is where we want it to go.  Tim Lyons is a sharp chassis man, but he's trying to sneak up on the setup without flipping the thing over backwards.  It needs to leave off the brake at about 5000 rpm, but has not hooked yet above 3000.  They'll get there.  Cool to see Brainerd get a little press.  I grew up there with lanes full of Stock, Super Stock, and Modified cars.  Cotton Perry ran there weekly in the "Pocket Rocket" which was a notorious Modified killer near the end of Modified Eliminator in the '70s up to 1980.

That article had pix, gotta scroll way down, pic #84 and 94 of 100. Also a red 65 Comet a couple pix beyond that, #87 and 89. Then the HenryJ they mention is #95 and 96.

No good pix of Lizzy Musi though, that'd be her in the pink shorts :-* ... with that goofball from Street Outlaws.  ::)

That Fairlane is gorgeous and it sounds like it is coming together nicely.  Congrats to you Blair and Vernon.

I'd punch a puppy right in his dumb little face for a chance to make a pass in that car.

anything new with this car?  I believe it is a great example of FE Ford Capabilities and would like to keep up with how this car is doing

5's??? He wasn't even in the 7's last time I saw it at Beaver Springs... I mean Atlanta is a quarter mile track and it would be silly to think that was just eighth mile.  :-*

But anyways... i'd say there is lots more left in it when he ditches that stupid slushbox. It launches like a Greyhound bus.
A "proper" convertor,  lower gear... or better yet a stick, which most automatic racers may not realize has an infinitely adjustable stall speed.
