The New FordFE Forum
« on: March 09, 2018, 06:16:57 PM »
Earlier today I noticed that some poor misguided individual who shall not be named (Rabotnick) confirmed the theory that I would inhabit the Off Topic Lounge there, thus inviting speculation from others. Sure enough, the mention of my name multiple times in one thread cause the Tapatalk bots to not only remove the thread, but they vaporized the entire Off Topic subforum altogether. As I type this, it is still gone. I feel warm and fuzzy that The Powers That Be have me on their list. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to watch for black Escalades outside my house.

I still see it, 11 post under Barry's topic of FElony's new hang out. Maybe they figured out how to just block your access?
I'd lift the shades and check the vehicles in front of your house.

Look at complaints about ads and porno sites nosing into the action there. This is what Tapatalk is about. Your writing and presence is for inspection, recording, and sale.

Yes. So, if you can see the Off Topic forum and I (still) can't then it is off limits to lurkers, for the time being anyways.

Strange. Same thing my therapist said just before he jumped out the window.

How do you know my yard has dark corners? {opens back door} "Yoo hoo! Barry, is that you? C'mon in; I have booze and brownies! Did I mention the yard has scorpions in it? Yeah, see, I knew you didn't want to stay out there."

Never use French around a real 'zona scorpion. He'll take it as an insult and your face will look like the board after a dart tournament.

However, there is another matter. After you staggered out of here, I checked the dark corners of my yard to see why you were there in the first place. It seems a pair of OEM disc rotors are missing from one of the Cobras. Care to explain?

Serves me right for mentioning cutting OEM rotors where a member of the Dearborn Mafia could see. {slaps forehead} I'm such a knorb.

I would love to take credit for glitches over there, but Tapatalk will screw things up without my help. I got the same message this morning, then it was OK a few minutes later. Yesterday I opened my Network Monitor while parked on their main page, with my mouse cursor off the browser. I noted PayPal pinging my machine every couple minutes and some other miscellaneous activity. Nothing too nefarious yet. I did log in to turn off all notifications and the ability for others to PM me. I noticed you cannot cancel your account. No surprise, eh?

I never put my email out in "public". However, I believe you need to put one in the N54 system when you first enroll. I really don't recall, as I started in 2005, so it's been a while. What I do remember about the beginning was that I was being a tad FElonious from the start, and Ross told me I was soon to be on the outside looking in. Guess his crystal ball was in the shop that day.  ;)

I have a desktop rig that is hooked to a 43" Vizio. The new format has a tiny font and haphazard spacing, whereas this place has nice big font and proper spacing. I have the browser on my iPhone disabled, so I cannot see what Tapatalk looks like on a mobile device, which is what they are supposedly optimized for. Others?

I never logged into Tap a Talk during the change-over, either, but when I asked a question about pictures, I got two e-mails with about six different links to go to.  They got my e-mail from somewhere and now the spam will increase again, no doubt.  Joe-JDC

Odd, since I've not received any solicitations, ads, etc. I do see though that logging on can sometimes simply not work or I get what essentially is an error message "bad connection" at their end.

Still, I do like what I see and teething problems, which usually occur with such a massive switch-over, are expected. Time will tell.

On a similar note, I've been the moderator over on the SBF 'Net 54 site for many years now with the same "Machoneman" screen name. Sadly, the site owner has never replied to my warnings of the impending shutdown. I can only guess he's elected to let years of great posts die off as '54 shuts down.

I'm one of the few that doesn't like it. It's harder to negotiate and very unappealing to the eye. Here, if there are new posts, they are easily seen on the front page, and the coloration is much easier on the eyes. Might seem like minor complaints to some, but it makes a big difference in my opinion.

Some more homework turns up what appears to be this: Tap originated in China, with a domestic corporate office listed in Santa Monica, CA. Original filing in 2014, shows initial president to be Wong Tung Yat. The only return on that name is this: http://www.hkcinemagic.com/en/people.asp?id=1527 There were indications that Tap was going under right about a year ago. However, it surged and acquired other posting platforms besides N54 last year. Very incomplete info here:
https://pitchbook.com/profiles/company/63996-04
It seems that Yat is out, but Tap is still run by the Chinese. Of course, we should rejoice over that, as our little yellow masters would NEVER think of hacking our mobile devices or computers to steal critical information. That is unheard of from China. Our buddies. Love us long time.

Maybe you can start a new SBF forum using the game plan used here, so people can zoom back and forth between the two without getting itchy and scratchy. What do you think of sbftech.com? Is there something better? Am I thinking things through?  ::)

After checking in (been a long time) to the SBF Tech forum based on your tip, it is pretty slow over there with many old posts. I tried it some years ago but too many replies revealed a lot of ill-informed folks. It's too bad as giving clearly wrong, ill-advised and weird advice to others turned me off, for sure. Maybe that's changed but I doubt it.

So, you are going to convince Jay to replace sbftech AND the N54 SBF forum with a subforum on this site? Awful lot of us have both. Would increase traffic and participation. C'mon, Linkmaster, you can do it.

It costs me about $100 per year to host this forum, and I get a lot more value out of it than that, so I'm happy to pay the bills.  Seems like there ought to be any number of small block Ford enthusiasts who could do the same thing for a small block Ford forum.  I've thought about adding a subforum for Y-Blocks and MELs, but it seems like it would be strange to go to fepower.net and look for Y-Block or MEL stuff.  Same for a small block forum.  Since the bar for a new web site and forum is so low it seems like any number of people could start one up for one of those engine families.  I suppose I could do it, but I'm just not all that interested in those other engines, so it doesn't make a lot of sense for me to do it.  Am I wrong about this?

By the way, I see that there are "membership" options that you can pay for on the new FordFE forum.  Blatant money grab, along with all those old "Donation" buttons.  These forums hardly cost anything to run, and I think its disingenuous to solicit money from the members, when they really don't cost the owner anything...

Yes. As mentioned, many guys here have that interest in other stuff. It's always nice to be able to yak amongst people you already know, rather than to keep jumping around to a different set of members every time. Also, much of the tech that involves the non-FE car is the same, so that still applies. When I formed my group (wow, has it been almost 20 years?) the primary emphasis was on FE's and 385's. However, the Charter rules allowed for Clevelands, MEL's, and Y's. The relatively small percentage of these threads was in no way distracting from the rest (keeping in mind that there were no subforums, either. All one category.)

With the degradation of sbftech.com, and the dissolution of N54 SBF, there is a hole open in the hobby. You yourself need not be involved if you don't want to. If you can resist the subliminal messages to build a 10,000 rpm 289, then good (or bad) for you. You can assign someone else to have admin over that section.

Looking at the forum index page now, I can see where the Drag Week subforums are looking dated and stale, and could probably be archived under one heading. An SBF (or "Other Ford Engines") topic would freshen the situation. Need not be anything "strange"; you are just adapting to a changing situation.

By the way, I see that there are "membership" options that you can pay for on the new FordFE forum.  Blatant money grab, along with all those old "Donation" buttons.  These forums hardly cost anything to run, and I think its disingenuous to solicit money from the members, when they really don't cost the owner anything...

I had a couple of phone conversations with Bob Sprowl, and this topic came up. I told him I don't have a problem with "donations" as long as it's not blatantly proffered. However, if an owner is going to accept some, he really should be active and show his "face" in that group on a regular basis, something that Anthony has failed to do from the get-go. Bob claimed that Anthony was really not interested in profiting, but... Hey, if a member wants to show support, then fine. I mean, look at FTE and similar. They are money making machines (in theory), but at least they do provide an extensive venue.

Anyway, it's your forum and your choice. Yes, somebody else could start his own, but then he's starting from scratch, and success is not guaranteed. Adding a subforum to one already going makes more sense. That's my take on the matter, Jay.

I've been hosting my Cleveland forum for quite a few years now.  We have about 350 members, lots of good dialogue.  FElony, you're welcome to hang out there.

I can hear it now. "FElony? Here? There goes the neighborhood." I can search for a linky when my crystal ball gets back from the shop.

Seems to me that any question about any Ford could be asked in the "Off Topic" sub-forum, not that there's anything wrong with dedicated sub-forums seeing as how we have Brent and Royce to cover some of the other engine types.

It's the moderation IMHO.   I spend something like $140/yr for my own domain and web space and host a couple of other sites in that space.  I'm with godaddy right now and I can install phpBB or Simple Machines on the account if I so desired.  I have no time to manage such a thing at this time.  I have a wealth of SBF stuff here that could be good for drawing in people.  Takes a lot of time to create searchable databases, format pictures, build albums and such.  If I was "retired" - maybe.  That's not likely to happen any time soon LOL.  Maybe should have done it in the past as we've had a web presence since around 1995.

For some reason I'm having flashbacks. Chopper rotors whoosh whoosh. Staccato jabber from black pajamas, punctuated by Mandarin orders. We aren't supposed to be in this sector, man. Hah there's some memories. Woodland Hills El Torito.
It became a real dump though but still there. The theater is now a Frys electronics.
Though I am not one, couple of my best buddy's are Nam vets. They don't like to talk to much about it.
I'll bet there are some crazy stories in FElony's head. The "Westmoreland doesn't know we're here" comment being one.

LOL, Facebook isn't going anywhere, neither is Amazon.  Now FB might take a huge revenue hit as they tighten up the data protections because that's why advertisers are on there.  FB monetizes the traffic and personal stats for targeted adverts.  Users can restrict what they see - I kill off ads - and without the personal data to target your demographic, why am I paying you again?   I can get a better deal from Google.  Some people are leaving but it's spit compared to the overall population of users.  Elon pulled their page - but he really didn't know they had a page and didn't care.  Also, most of the kids I know including grandkids with phones don't hardly use FB anymore.  They do use Instagram (along with SpaceX and a zillion others) - and that is owned by, wait for it...Facebook.

I block all political shares from friend - both sides.  If it says any of the trigger words (non inclusive) gun-Hillary-Obama-Trump-Fox  LOL, boom - gone.  I also break tags to same.  I see lots of hot rods, kids, puppies, cats, food and little BS.  Nice.  People on FB don't want your facts, some just push things that trip their triggers so you have to have the discipline to stay out of "someone is wrong on the internet" mode.  Sort of digital wrestling with pigs.

Also, if you bother to read the Terms and Conditions (some 40 pages long) you'd know what you're giving up in terms of data.  You didn't, I didn't, the other people didn't - so on one hand, what are you crying about?  You saw the banner, you clicked OK, so now...whats the beef?  Facebook's "defense" about Messenger - "You agreed to the terms of use which include...".  So don't use Messenger for chatting with your Ashley Madison hookup and such.  :)

Running a business FB page I will say that a large part of the FB population (maybe heavy internet/app uses as well) don't read.  "TLDR" if it's more than 5 words.  They won't even read whats on a graphic.  Post a graphic/flyer for a race with gate prices, gate times, etc - expect at least one post "what time does it start".  Same with the sale pages - "How much?"  "Did you bother to read the Ad?".  etc.  A lot of this offence at data mining is really offence at people's own stupidity and unwillingness to research the down side.   I just want it, screw the other stuff.

As for TapaCrap, you don't have to install it to read the forums.  There are several useful forums on Tapatalk, so it's just the lousy interface that you have to put up with.  My log in info on Tap includes nothing, and without the app on my devices they aren't mining anything.

Never on Facebook, never on Twitter. That's just me. Most people I talk to use Facebook like a personal diary, that all your friends can access.
I just read the posts on the new FE forum as well. The moderator let things get way out of hand a few times over the years. I like what Jay is doing here.

Something that people should keep in mind, and for the vast part it is true, that ANYTHING you do or ANYWHERE you go on the internet is tracked, logged and data mined. Period. That's not a conspiracy thing, it's just fact. That's how the internet works these days. FB has been doing it for some time, so I don't really get the 'uproar' that's occurring now. I will admit that that's one of the reasons I shut down my FB account though (even though FB will retain all that info, including pictures, whether you deactivate your account or not).

There are ways to minimize that tracking and data mining, and even some ways to get around it completely, but for the most part, 99.99% of people don't have a clue or don't care enough to research it, or even worry about it for that matter. I try and minimize, as best I can, the threat of data mining. It can help with identity theft, invasion of privacy and not getting spammed to death through your email, or even your home/cell phone by telemarketers. But if you make on-line purchases, you can only do so much.

I don't go anywhere on the net but basically car and news joints. I'm not nor ever have been a FB or anything else person besides forums that I'm interested in. If someone wants that info, cool.

Ditto.  What used to be a high school popularity contest for the senior high kids in year books (best smile, best athlete or whatever) has gone from a fairly harmless finite deal to a massive world wide popularity contest where the kid with the most "likes" from people he or she doesn't even know wins.  Scary, because they want it that way and crave approval so much they'll do anything to get it.  The whole social media thing is in my view the worst thing that has ever happened to young people and the parents of ten year olds who can't put down their phones don't even know it.

OK, here's a quickie . There is a faction behind the scenes that did not want Zuckerberg to go in the direction he was going. The Cambridge Analytics leak was utilized to reel him in and hamstring any illusions he had of gaining popularity with the citizenry. If Zuck truly thought that FB was going to recover, why would he publicly dump large amounts of his stock? I'm going to stick to my thought that FB, over time, will fail.

This last Sunday I was discussing this with someone whose quality of life has suffered of late as all he does is sit in front of his FB stream all day. He is a victim of FAD. He was unaware anything was amiss with MZ because he droids non-stop, and FB does not tell its own that the poopy is hitting the fan. I also told him that Bezos was gonna get hit, and he laughed. This morning Trump came out and said Amazon is targeted because of its prolific tax evasion and monopoly practices. Bezos is losing billions as we speak. The stars are going to be re-aligned.

Likewise, Musk is having dire problems with Tesla, as he has been the recipient of too much special interest. There will be others.

Years of FElony predictions coming true. As it has been. Those of you who talk down to me should wake up. It's clear you are unaware of downstream consequences in the Big Picture. We have witnessed the fall of Western Europe in a shockingly short time. The power struggle is just going to continue escalating while we just go upon our daily lives.

Anyway, it has become evident that, as predicted, my presence in this forum is less than appreciated by the Top Gun, so I'm going to wind it down.
