I'm double checking?
« on: October 24, 2017, 12:25:52 PM »
Have a 427 stroked to 482 using Barry's stroker kit with a c6. Is the crank pilot 1.848" or some say 1.50"? Also is ATI performance a good company to buy a torque converter, specifically their stage 1 stretmaster? Just in case if not, who would you recommend? Thank You!

I've used Broader performance and PTC for convertors.  I have been very happy with both.

FE's and early 429's took the 1.848 pilot.
Do yourself a huge favor and test fit the convertor to the engine prior to installing in the transmission.  It is a fairly common issue that the converter or crank needs a few thousands taken off prior to fitting properly.

What Drew said, plus - what you're using for a cam will guide what you need for a torque convertor. If your cam is fairly rowdy you'll probably need more convertor and should check with the torque convertor manufacturer for a recommendation. ATI is a quality company, and I've seen many people happy with Broader like Drew said too. The convertors usually come painted and I always sand the paint off the convertor hub where it goes into the crank because like Drew pointed out it's a tight fit.

+1 on Broader Performance. Jay Broader is a good guy to deal with.

Another thing to look for when test fitting is the clearance between the heads of the flex plate bolts and torque converter. I've dealt with this issue recently on my 504. Torque converter I'm using ran into the factory bolt heads about an 1/8 inch before the mounting bosses hit the flex plate. Found some 12 point shorties in ARP's catalog that worked.

ATI makes a good part - as do the others mentioned.
It seems like convertors are like women - everybody wants a different one :)

The pilot is as said - 1.850.
The test fit recommendation is also a good idea - harder to address when the converter and trans are in the air above your head...
