New video from TNT last weekend, truck leaves violently with the little rented mule engine, very old truck pulling build I did back in 2005-6ish I think, hyperutectic piston, OEM rod with arp bolts, 1U crank, low riser heads, ported with CJ valves, street dominator intake, 4150 carb, custom 2" headers from speedway motors kit, converter is from ultimate converter concepts stalls 4300 with this combo on the Transbrake with throttle wide open and plenty of rear gear ( 4.86) old M/T 13-31 slicks.

Cody what have you done with your rear suspension ? What springs and shocks do you use ?And is your differential bolted down on top of the springs or located on the bottom of the springs like factory .Just curious a fellow racer has a truck like yours and he needs some rear suspension help .Nice photo and leave young man !! I am still getting used to my trans brake in the comet lot different than foot braking it . Keep at it Doug .

Best thing I ever did was relocate my shocks behind the rear axle, I actually used all the factory brackets, and used a pair of old front shocks off my truck on the rear (shorter) worked out quite well, the leaf springs are shortened on the back half only, lowers the rear of truck and lets them flex more. That's all I ever had done to the rear until I started using the Transbrake. Then I had to build a adjustable slapper/ladder bar setup which allows the spring to handle the violence of the Transbrake.. hope this helps.

Nice!

But Blue, take a slow-mo look at your ride leaving the line. The truck actually jumps sideways a bunch after take-off. Given a good starting line, tires at proper pressure, etc.

I'd venture your springs/shocks/locator (if equipped) are not doing the job. Suggest a close up vid of the truck at take-off from behind or from the rear.  Better would be a go-pro or other camera showing the underside at launch. Any side hop = lost e.t. and worse, side loading can more readily break $$$ stuff!

Yes that pass wrecked the left main leaf spring, it is sprung now, front half of it has a 1/4 inch gap between it and the rest of the spring pack. I have new springs on order and a plan to reinforce the main leaf so it doesn't happen again. This is the second time over 6 years that the truck has wrecked the main leaf spring, first one I just figured old age original 30 year old spring just gave up but now it wrecked a new spring that was only 3 years old and a limited amount of passes, I will get it fixed and going straight again, and will be adding more power lol.  Darncat, if the planets align, I'm hoping to run drag week this year. Don't you go every year?

So Cody, have you considered Cal-Tracs? Heck you could even make your own. Can't think of any racer, Jay Brown included, who doesn't sing their praises as to how well they work.

This type of traction aid would also I think forever solve you main leaf 'bending' issue as with the Cal-Tracs the front of the spring mainly acts as a locater.

Front suspension is old Stock stuff with new bushings, OEM springs are cut some to bring ride height down some with front end of truck gutted, cheap comp engineering 90/10 shocks and I extended the bottom shock mount to limit suspension drop and lift the wheels out of the beams sooner for a better reaction time. I couldn't afford cal tracs when I built the suspension way back when, and now there is just something to be said about building my own stuff and not buying it. Thanks all

Thanks Cody for the information I will pass it on .This past weekend I saw a 71 f100 drag truck his was lowered front and back .With a BIG 460 he was running Low sixes ! (6.16) That was one of the quickest trucks I have ever seen .My 3400 lb. comet just goes 6.77 .You have an awesome truck! Is that a Merkl trans brake ?

Thanks, I didn't have time put big engine back in after ice racing, or change gears for that matter, I think that largely contributed to the wheelie in the video

Got it going nice and straight now, for the last 20 or so passes, then the old Yukon 31 spline axle gave up on me, now I'm forced to install the completely new narrowed/back braced/disk brake/35 spline rearend housing I've been building

As most of you probably read already.  I got a new mill in the mistress. Blair gets most of the credit for the engine since it was mostly his recipe. I sent him a bunch of parts and he worked them into the combo. Anyway, the truck now has a new narrowed, back braced 9" rearend with vented/slotted disc brakes, 35 spline axles, and a big pinion 35 spline, 4.57 pro gear. 31.25 x 12.2W Phoenix tire on a 14" rim, leaf springs from LMC truck with custom fabricated by me spring hangers and brackets. Also added a 6 point roll bar and 5 point harness. Went to a treaded skinny street radial tire on the front for drag week last year that I didn't get to go to... it also has a sumped stainless fuel cell and stainless battery tray all hidden under the flare side bed. Anyway, with all the changes and myself losing 35 lbs the truck still gained and now weighs between 4050-4150 depending which rear tire and how full the fuel cell is. Last weekend at annual ford shootout memorial race in hardinsburg KY (US 60 dragway) the truck ran a new best of 1.43 60 ft and 6.53@104 mph. I haven't updated anything lately because I feel there is more left in the combo. In my mind there should still be a tenth or two to get yet if my new converter ever shows up from ATI... I could also buy another set of gears because I'm not optimized for the 1/4 mile yet much less the 1/8 mile. I'll update again if I have anything of good news to report yet this season... with my business being busy and moving/renovating a old building hasn't left me much time for playing at the track.

Wow Cody, huge improvement with the new "Blair" motor, almost a second. I have followed your truck ever since I started lurking this forum and your truck is what encouraged me to start running the Ranchero. Im 700 pounds lighter than you and my best to date is a 6.79, 1.49 60 ft. You got me worried now with your rear end failure. I just went to 31 spline, N case, Quick Performance chunk, 1350 yoke thinking Id be good forever. I don't have a transbrake and that may be the "failure" secret. As CJShaker mentioned, you need a poster of the recent launch pic. Regardless, please keep posting updates as Im sure theres more there and Im sure interested to see the even faster timeslips that I know are coming.
BTW, care to post any engine data? Cant believe you would still be running iron heads, but I believe Blair could make a shoebox work. Youre definitely making some power, maybe Werby can GONK that thing.

FINALLY catching up on your ride.
A couple questions:
* I assume that 4050-4150 weight is INCLUDING you ??

* HEADERS: (Maybe for Blair) - what size headers were used on that 800+ hp dyno run?
The Gonkulator wanted 2-1/8 or even 2-1/4 diameter
Are you still running those little 2" diameter headers? If so they are way small. Gonkulator says as much as 60hp too small.

Most of your missing 0.1 could be right in there, plus a couple MPH.

A good demo of how much extra engine it takes to go "just a second" faster in the 1/8 mile.
Yours has to be the fastest FE truck around. Still. ;D

Good to hear from you. Yes I'm still running the same old 2" home built headers and 3.5 collectors and 3" x-pipe with cut outs  from years past... ironically the big engine only lost a tenth in the 1/8 from plugging the cut outs and running through the full exhaust... the torque converter is still too tight and I don't have enough gear in the truck for a optimum pass as I still want to drive it on the street. I thought my headers were too small also but Blair told me to only step them up to 2.125 and the appropriate collector. I'm working a lot on trying to get my business where I'm comfortable and happy then hopefully I'll have some time to work on the truck some more. Yes 4100 lbs going down the track. I'm looking into possibly changing the front suspension to struts and adding the rest of the tubes to make the truck legal to run faster than 10.0... don't know if or when I'd get there but I'm entertaining  the idea lol. Thanks

Well it’s been a loooong while but I finally made a little time to work on the truck and take it to the track… made a couple test passes, at dragway 42 for Tony Fritz’s fast ford event, and learned some things, after all this time the 520 continues to keep chugging along in the mistress. Borrowed a standard ratio trans from my buddy Scott, slid my nitrous converter in the truck with the intention of bottle feeding the truck some this weekend. They had two quick 8 races on the schedule one of them being FE only, along with a FE only bracket race, and they’re all ford no box class which I also entered. I didn’t believe it at first when they announced my name as qualifying for the fe quick 8… the bump was 10.14. the Transbrake wasn’t working on the truck so I was two footing it and grabbing the sassy button as soon as I could… probably 10-15 ft off the line, I was kinda worried about hurting the trans or twisting off the stock C6 input shaft. Everything survived thankfully and I drove the truck to a Father’s Day cook out Sunday afternoon. So I had 73 nitrous jet in the plate (smallest that comes with the plate system I won at the ford memorial race at US 60 dragway years back,and set the timing to 27 degrees all in and was rewarded with a 10.03 and 135 mph and change,  after the second attempt on my 29.5/10.5 tires Friday night. Pulled plugs and everything looked fine and dandy, engine didn’t miss a beat. After some hard negotiating with myself back and forth Saturday morning I decided to pull 3 degrees more timing and bump the plate up to a 82 jet and put the 32/14 big tires on and let her roll the dice and see what shakes out. Finish line rpm was 7100 roughly Friday nite and I though I could do the old engine a favor and get the finish line rpm down a touch since it’s waaay overdue for a refresh. So quick 8 qualifying pass with no Transbrake again and grab the button as soon as I could I was rewarded with a 9.90 and just short of 137 mph. Kinda goofy running down a thunderbolt clone in a 4200 lb hillbilly pickup.. he went 9.84 and tree’d me a little bit but I had almost 2 mph on the car with my truck on the big end lol… wonder what he was thinking when he seen me right next to him, I didn’t get his name but it’s a beautiful burgundy t-bolt car, I assume a clone. I made one N/A pass and it went 10.93 and 122 mph but that was with the timing still pulled out. Pretty pleased with the truck’s performance, driver was suspect though, couldn’t get a green light to save my butt… last three attempts were .023,.024,.024 red… got to put names to some new faces and converse with a few old friends from ford race years gone by so it was a successful ish weekend ::)

Now to get the Booggy box installed and the Transbrake fixed to see what the truck can really do, then probably install some more bars in the cab since I surpassed the 10.00 mark without it being a perfect pass scenario. Anyway, me and the truck are still around, fun event, good people, nice venue, and plenty fast fords, just would love to see more FE’s…. Now back to reality (work)

Jay’s old Victor did  not make it on this engine, I have that one in mind for another project, if I ever get to it… this engine does have a Victor Intake on it though, that needs more massaging in my opinion. I think the old pickup might pickup a little more yet once I get a few things straightened out and freshen the engine. Felt good to be back in the seat for sure.

Don't you also need a chute when you hit the 9's?
I can only imagine running a Thunderbolt and seeing a truck creeping on you at the finish line...lol  Seems trucks are pretty popular these days. I can never understand how they get them to hook, being so light in the tail. And every truck that I've had seemed to get pretty loose when getting around 100mph. I assumed from air getting under them.

i think they recommend a chute at 125 mph,but they are mandatory at 150,chutes look cool,i would put one on it especially if your going to go even faster in the future,love your combo man! since i only live a couple hours away from Blair,i hope to get him to work on one of my fe engines in the near future.
