Opinion on Wisco pistons?
« on: March 22, 2017, 05:12:44 AM »
I`ve been looking for pistons for my 427 tunnel port build and ran across some new Wiscos. Not every using them before I`m asking for Opinions on quality fit etc . The ones I found are new and were installed but never run, owner changed his mind during mockup. so all they need are spiro locks.

Not a bad piston, but not "mainstream" anymore, like they used to be.  If the compression height, bore, and volume match your specs, and they are a good deal, they will probably work just fine for you.

I used them in my 427 build with no problems.

Wiseco is actually an excellent product.  Made in Mentor Ohio.  They are the only - the only - American piston manufacturer brand that does their own work from foundry to forging to finished product "in house.  They are owned by the same investment bank that owns JE/SRP, and they supply forgings and at least some machining to those folks as well.  Wiseco has long been associated with the small engine side of the business (snowmobile, ATV, motorcycle), so the corporation has focused on that and let JE/SRP handle (screw up) most of their automotive business.

I don`t know whose mock up it was. The pistons are listed on Epay in NY about 4hrs from me. I went back and re read the description and found the pins were not included. I contacted the machine shop that has them and they said they were for standard stroke 427, and the engine was going in a Corbra kit car. I always remember Wisco as a lawnmower/ snowmobile supplier of pistons back in the 70s & 80s, but not so much auto pistons. I`m still looking.

I paid about $350 or so for a complete set of 8 pistons/pins/rings/locks from Roush through eBay.  High quality and great customer support.  They will sell you the correct pins and locks if you call them.

Who mock's up pistons ?

Basically, any engine builder that's worth a darn. It's the only way to correctly determine where the piston sits in the hole, to figure compression ratio, valve to piston clearance or any other unforseen issues.

I have used them in Y blocks and they are in my MEL EMC engine.. Their product is not quite as pretty as JE or CP or Venolia, but they are quality parts and I find the tech people good to deal with. They actually knew how to make a MEL piston and had a drawing on file.. There was a screw up on their part on an 1100 dollar set of pistons and they produced a new set in 6 days and sent them no charge.. I would do business with them again..

I've run Wiseco in all my motors.  No issues at all.  They are local so that is why the shop I use deals with them.  Heck my wagon even make it in their catalog a couple years ago in the FE section.
