New Ford vs Ferrari movie
« on: October 29, 2016, 04:28:43 PM »
There is a new movie coming out ( I don't know the release date ) called "The 24 Hour War". It is about the Ford vs Ferrari battle at LeMans in the 60's. Here is a link to the movie trailer on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLRpi3w3Ns0

It's co-directed by Adam Corolla, who's kind of a car guy. Let's hope it's good. Also hoping it gets a wide distribution.

Adam is indeed a car guy.
Check out "Winning: The Racing Life of Paul Newman". Corolla's movie, pretty good.

The trailer, with its suggestion that death is looking over the driver's shoulder, puts the emphasis in the wrong place. I'm going to suppose that there'll be worthwhile footage and a lot of florid prose involved.

I agree, bad idea. Not part of the Ferrari Ford deal.

Looks pretty good to me. The "death" thing was only part of the beginning, and in fact it was a pretty deadly race back then, with 5 deaths in 6 years from '65-'69...one of them being a GT 40 Mk II.
I wonder how it's going to be released and where it'll be shown? I can't see them having this in typical movie theaters.

Walt Hansgen and Ken Miles both died in GT40s but neither during the 24 Hour Race. Was there someone killed in a GT40 DURING  the 24 Hours?

I too cringed while watching the trailer when it played up fiery crashes at the beginning. I enjoy most all forms of motorsports and like most fans, get tired of dispelling the belief that people only watch auto racing for the carnage. But the fact remains that many forms of motorsports were still pretty dangerous then. Many of the drivers of the era crossed over, driving in different series and types of cars - Indy and Nascar, Grand Prix and LeMans, and so on, and had seen many of their fellow drivers die during their careers. My point being that just because a driver died while competing at the Indy 500 or the Daytona 500, I'm sure it still affected the whole community of drivers and fans. Walt Hansgen died during testing for LeMans at LeMans, I'd say that counts as the event. I'd guess most of us that are into cars roll our eyes when Hollywood plays up the drama and takes license with the true story when they try to do a film on anything automotive, I imagine we'll just have to watch and see how this effort turned out. Adam Corolla is calling this a documentary, the story that originally got him interested was purchased by a different production and went nowhere, so I'm hoping it's more accurate and less fantasy. After all they could have done Fast and Furious - the GT 40 years.

It's most likely a documentary of the whole situation. You cannot grasp the importance of the 24 Hours of LeMans without discussing how dangerous it was back then. You couldn't do a documentary of a great F1 rivalry in the 60's without discussing how dangerous F1 was. Motorsports was dangerous and few took safety seriously. To understand the 24 Heures du Mans is to understand how far people were willing to go to win it.

Ford's rivalry with Ferrari wasn't limited to grand touring racing however. Ford's desire to crush Ferrari was entirely, which meant grand prix racing as well. The result? Ford teamed up with Cosworth and created an engine so damn good, it dominated Formula 1 for a decade, winning several world championship titles. The DFV was a powerhouse, and one of the best engines ever designed. Had Ford allowed JW Automotive to use a DFV in the GT40's as John had wanted, the GT40 would have been even harder to beat. As the GT40 with the 289's was, Porsche was spending truck loads of cash on their GT program just to beat JW Automotive. Eventually Porsche hired JWA to run their 917K's, and Gulf Oil was in an exclusive agreement with JWA which helped.

In 1968, I wrote the Trilogy of Death on Wheels, three short stories that intertwined high performance and mortality. One was written in first person and involved "several minutes" of flashback remembrances in the scant second before my race car hit a concrete abutment at speed. Lawlessness, an acid trip (hey, it was '68), lots of gore. It's how I rolled then. It's how I roll now. Except for the acid. Geritol these days. Maybe my court-appointed lawyer can come with some lame way to sue every film maker who had an actor killed or injured in a car since then. I am willing to settle for just a few hundred per flick. Shouldn't be too hard. I'm easy.
