Tunnel Port heads on E\bay and bangshift

http://bangshift.com/bangshift1320/fe-freaks-theres-a-set-of-427-tunnel-port-heads-for-sale-on-ebay-right-now/

We all know that the tunnel port heads are legendary for their radical pushrod tube thru the port design, reportedly allowing tennis ball sized ports.  But how good do they work, especilally with todays big FE's?
What is the flow? Power potential? Port velocity?

THanks, Joel

I have a pair of Tunnel Port heads ( C7OE-K casting ) that I had flow tested at R & R Performance in Spring Lake Park, Mn., the same place Jay uses. They have not been ported and use stock size valves ( 2.250 intake, 1.750 exhaust ). They are aftermarket valves, I'll have to look up the brand, but nothing too fancy. Also just a fairly standard valve job, nothing trick. Here are my flow figures:

Intake:
Lift   .100    .200   .300   .400   .500   .600   .700   .800

CFM     60     124    205    242    280    305    323    325

Exhaust:
Lift    .100    .200   .300   .400   .500   .600   .700   .800

CFM      58     108    144    176    185    190    191    192

The intake ports, although generous, are not actually tennis ball size. And like most stock Ford heads of the era, the exhaust ports are the real limiting factor -  they are basically the same as any generic FE, but with the larger size valve.  I can't answer your other questions, I know some of the engine builders on here have experience building Tunnel Ports, hopefully they chime in, along with maybe Joe C. I believe someone on the forum had posted info on their Tunnel Port build in the past.

They did well for what they were designed for - NASCAR and LeMans - the wins prove that, but like lots of this vintage FE stuff, there are better modern aftermarket options now when you factor in the cost.

Those are some pretty impressive numbers on the intake side.
How does that compare to an untouched cammer head?

I'd say pretty damn good as Barry got 602 hp with a stroker 427:

Untouched SOHC heads flow just a little better on the intake (340-ish), and a LOT better on the exhaust (245-ish) - Jay

They work really well when you close the port cross section up.   We picked up 40 cfm over the factory flow numbers by making the ports *smaller*....

Other than that, you have to use a little different camshaft thinking than you do with a regular FE head.....  but they make big horsepower.  The two links that were posted were both my engines.  There was a third iteration that wasn't shown...it was a 465 inch TP with untouched heads.  It made right at 600 hp.

Didn't someone make an aftermarket set of aluminum Tunnel Port heads with a filled intake port and a raised exhaust - other than Dove?? The bigger cubic inch you can get now would really help these heads work !!

The guy that has this ad on ebay is not really trying to sell those heads or intake. I sent him a message and
he is basically advertising to build an engine that's why he has that ridiculous price on those heads and the ad is
for the heads only and not with the intake.  He wouldn't price the intake when I asked him to. I have one of those intakes
and was just curious what he was going to ask for it.
The heads are not pristine by any means. Look closely and you can see a crack at one of the bolt holes on that one
pic showing the combustion chamber. I also have a nicer set than those.  Buyer beware with this guy!
We discussed this a while back on the FE forum.
You are right in the fact that more cubes makes these heads work better but they also benefit from some work like
Brent pointed out.
