Another new guy and a 445.
« on: July 22, 2016, 02:45:14 PM »
After much lurking and soaking up as much as I could via the forum and member communication. I have had a few false starts and am finally ready to start work on a 445. Figured I would post the combo here for input and to motivate me to finish. This motor was initially slated for a 62 ford F100 but will instead be going into my 67 Cougar until a more serious motor can be put together for it. I have no clear HP expectation from this motor just a strong street car that is fun to play with. Had plans for a 462 solid roller, but this is what I am working with now. I have assembled quite a few motors but this is the first FE, although I have owned a few. Any and all input is welcome.

My question is am I missing something or on the right track before I start assembly I have no issue replacing parts if needed.

Sounds a nice combo.
I'd check valve to cylinder wall clearance with the 4.08 bore and 2.200 intake valves just to be sure.

Thanks Keith, I have been told they will fit but will certainly check them before I assemble it.

Go to the Dyno page.  Brent Lykins built an engine pretty close to your parts list and got 525 hp and 588 tq.  Sounds like a killer street engine.

Welcome!  I was confused about the quarter BT intake, then it dawned on me you meant one four barred.  LOL  Those are usually designated 4V, 2 x 4V, or 8V intakes.  Don't even get started on the 3 x 2V, or 6V, or three duces, low riser, medium riser, high riser 4V, 8V, TW, TP, dual plane, single plane, etc, etc.  LOL.  Anyway, hope you have great success with the build.  Joe-JDC

nhsohc,

We never really discussed HP numbers but I did source a lot of my parts including the cam from Brent. I should add he is very helpful and an outstanding vendor. Thank you for the heads up I had never seen that dyno data that I recall. Obviously I got the heads from Barry and he was great to deal with also,  good communication throughout the process, they were worth the wait.

Joe - Fixed it  ;)

There's a good group of engine builders here to get info and parts from. Sounds like your already sourcing a few. These guys are among the best with the FE stuff and you won't go wrong with taking all there advice in and learning from it. Even have different opinion's sometimes but I take that as a good thing. Lots of dam good Apple pie out there and not always made the same. Welcome to Jays site, he to is a stand up guy and always willing to help with anything. Good luck on your project and most of all enjoy it.

Thanks Keith.
I have lurked and used the PM feature a while and figured is was time to post my combo. Maybe I will be able to contribute some day. I am sure I will have a lot of questions in the coming months. Almost all my parts (blocks being the exception) for this and the stalled 462 project have been sourced from and recommended by forum vendors. Keep the money at home so to speak.

My manifold does not have the heat crossover. Is a valley tin needed or a good idea? Same question on tins for the survival heads and of needed which ones I think there are a couple. A sprk plug and wire recommendation would be appreciated also.

No valley tin for hydraulic roller.  By the time you cut it to clear the link bars it'll look like a lace curtain anyways.

Short rocker tins are possible and useful depending on the rocker system you choose.  Long "finger" tins won't fit many intakes.  I rarely use either one with aftermarket rockers.

We use plain old 3924 Autolite copper plugs and MSD wires.  I kinda like black wires....

List what you have purchased or have already and what you're yet to get coming. I might be a little help because we're about to pull some of this stuff off of a 390 (like the T-pan).

mbrunson427, All items on the list have been purchased. I actually just ordered a t-pan yesterday afternoon. I went with the Moroso road race pan. The main purpose of the post was to introduce myself and put the combo out for input before I assemble it and changes become more difficult. The machine work on the block is currently being done and the heads are being dropped off for a street/strip valve and port job to a local shop today. I may be interested in some of your parts for my next build. Plus a guy can never really have enough extra parts laying around the shop. Shoot me a PM with what you have.

Thanks

Mike.
