rear main seal crush
« on: April 16, 2012, 10:43:20 AM »
I came across this on the 460 forum where a guy solved his rear main leak and thought it might be of interest to the FE crowd as well.

http://www.460ford.com/forum/showthread.php?t=135753&page=3

It turns out that the Fel-Pro rear main seals he was using were too long and some deformation was occuring after install.
It sounds like he trimmed the length of the seal to .015 protrusion and solved his oil leak problem.
I know I had problems with Fel-Pro side seals having inconsistent width dimensions so It's not a stretch to think that the crank seal could also have variations.
Just something to think about checking if you're not already when installing the crankshaft.

That is a very, very interesting thread.  I have never heard of doing that to a rear main seal, but it certainly makes sense.  I will be checking for that crush dimension on my next build of the high riser...

I just went out and compared an FE rear main seal to a 460 rear main seal and the 460 seal was approximately 1/2 inch longer.
To me that doesn't seem like it would make much difference but I thought I'd throw that out there in case somebody else thought it might.
