he says they are replacing the timing chain on a lot of the 3.5 ecoboosts in the pickups. They are stretching.

This is my concern with the truck engines.
I get it in a smaller platforms. Nice engine but when you need a V8 you need a V8. I hope they prove me wrong.

We had one come into work that stretched the chains, jumped about 3 or 4 teeth on the crank and bent some valves. Cranked over real easy, zero compression!  Besides the timing chains, I've had a couple ecoboost F150s come through the shop needing turbos also. Turbo wastegate acuators get stuck and make weird boost noises along with possible surging under load. They run decent when everything is right though.

I wonder how many miles they will typically go before the chains stretch so much that they should be replaced?  I have a 3.6L Ecoboost in my 2014 pickup; already got 45K miles on it...

Yes,  tows my race car and trailer effortlessly.  Feels the same as my 2005 F-150 with the 5.4.

The last one I saw come in had 60-65k miles I believe. Usually it is higher than that for the majority of what we see.

I believe "chain stretch" is a bit of a misnomer in that the links don't stretch but rather the pins and mating parts wear and that allows the chain to get longer. Having grown up with dirt-bikes its interesting to see the amount of wear/stretch is routine until the components wear through their hardened surface layers and wear/stretch suddenly accelerates big time.
   When it comes to wear/stretch on timing chains in these new fangled high-tech motors you got to figure the same environmentally friendly near zero-zinc crap oil's features or lack thereof that kills flat tappet cams might well play hell on the parts of a chain.  D'oh!

      Personally I can't understand Ford's building the GT in the, I guess you'd call it configuration: price, limited quantities and high tech infrastructure of the car.  Two seat exotic Chevy has the Vette and dare we compare Ford has the GT (lets not forget the last GT version was compared to Vettes, Viper's and other exotics by the magazines. But that Ferrari $400K+ sticker puts that in an entirely new league.  Certainly there are balance points of production numbers:cost that with higher production numbers the cost should fall but to me Ford is missing the market, profit and notoriety of having an exotic in popular numbers.   Hard to handle Ford building such a restricted number of GTs and the price  ---
