2 Bolt/ 3 Bolt Mounts?
« on: March 27, 2012, 11:35:26 PM »
I have a 58 Fairlane with 352 COM combo in it and I'm swapping in a 428 C-6 combination. I'm waiting for parts etc, so I decided to go ahead and yank the COM and and fab a transmission crossmember for the C-6. I bolted a empty C-6 case to the 352 and it occurred to me that my 352 has the 2 bolt motor mounts and the 428 has the 3 bolt mounts.
My question is will  the 3 bolt mounts make any difference? Will my 428 sit in exactly the same spot as my 352?

Maybe.
There are different mounts that move the stud on the rubber Mount.
I think a late Gal mount moves the engine back about 1 inch form a late Fairlane/Tornio mount.
I can't be certain but there are different mounts. I have a few sets of mounts for
my Fairlanes and they are not all exactly the same.
Plus there are mounts from overseas that think everything is the same. LOL
In the first link the stud is back far.

In this link the stud is more centred.

If it wasn't such a big deal to get the engine in the Fairlane with the headers on I would probably
test out a few set back ones. lol
You can use your 2 bolt mounts on the three bolt block. Might have to fudge them a bit.

The 428 block should have both the 3 bolt and the 2 bolt mounts.  Where you get screwed is with an early block into a late car and find you need 3 bolt mounts on the block and they aren't there.

Dr, You raise an interesting point.

When my '67 XR7GT Cougar was a few months old, I acquired a '63 427 engine, in a basket, and set about putting it together to go in the 'Cat'. I won't go through all the parts, but I put in such things as a new 'AA' cam and a set of shell lifters, did a valve job, and topped it all off with an 'XE' Sidewinder. I cut the flanges off a set of Hooker (I think) headers and substituted a set of up-'n'-down-only '27 pieces, etc.

When it came time to put the engine in the car, I noticed the mis-match at the mounts and got all excited for a few minutes. But even the two on the block and 3 on the '67 mounts lined-up OK somehow and the engine dropped right down where it was supposed to go.

I don't remember all the details, but somehow it DID fit together without any problems. I've noticed other comments such as yours, but I know what I did!  ?????

KS, you must have the ultra-unobtainium 2.5 bolt block that is a cross between a 3 bolt and a 2 bolt that will fit in both early and late model cars.   ;D

I know my 428 service replacement block is dual patterned and my '62 390 (with curious abundance of C4 marked parts internally) block is 2-bolt and I was always told early was 2, late was 3 and the two wouldn't line up.  Maybe the combo of the block and frame in your case it all magically works.  Nothing ever FE related goes that smoothly the first time for me, so glad to hear someone catches a break once in a while.   ;)

To clarify, my memory says that two of the three holes in the mount lined up with the two holes in the block.  The memory from late in '67 is somewhat fuzzy, but I didn't have to re-work the mount at all. I was mildly concerned about that third hole 'hangin' out in the breeze' but it never caused any trouble.

Sounds like if I put 58 mounts on the 428 it will fit perfectly....unless Henry's ghost haunts me yet again!
