Bllhousing Bolt Recommendation
« on: February 28, 2016, 07:51:04 PM »
I finally got my engine off the engine stand and on to a set of motofeet to mock up the transmission.  Unfortunately I don't have any stock bellhousing to block bolts so I'm going to pick up some chromoly ones from ARP.  Does anybody know what would be an acceptable length into the block?  I'm using a cast iron bellhousing so 1" of the bolt length is taken there.  I don't want to go too long as the equalizer bar bracket can contact one of these bolts if it is too long.  With 6 bolts clamping them together, would 0.5" of threads into the block per bolt have sufficient strength to hold things together assuming @ 550HP?  I'm pretty sure 1" of threads into the block will bottom out in places.  Anybody have any real world experience?  Any and all expertise is appreciated!

I'm not sure of the lengths needed right off hand, but I'd want them to go into the block as far as possible, without bottoming out or protruding through the ends of the open holes. There are a couple of different lengths and It wouldn't be hard to throw the bell on and take a measurement using a piece of rod.

But you don't really need chromemoly bolts. Grade 8 would be plenty strong enough for anything you could throw at it. I think stock was grade 5 if I remember correctly.
