428 Top end
« on: February 24, 2012, 11:36:57 PM »
Well I'm looking at upgrading my 428 to perform at its best and ran into this ad.  What would an engine builder look for when asking questions about these parts?  Dove SK Medium riser alum. heads and dove single plane intake. 2.19-1.76 stainless valves 11/32 stem, titanium retainers, comp springs flat tappet, 4150 intake. will pull of car when bought. Buyer pays shipping. contact 251-656-7753 8/7pm 3000.00 or best offer

I currently have basically an unkown bottom end, other then its being all rebuild I don't know detailed specs on what piston, cam ect was used.   Rods are C6AE so there still stock I Beams and bolts.   I believe originally the motor was build for street performance and reliability.   I now want street/strip performance so I would like to start with a set of heads/intake and drivetrain.

I'm a little determined to do as much work I can on my car but I'm no engine builder.  I've rebuild and upgraded my 69 mustang in pretty much every area except the internals of this motor.   My wallet is very light so I do keep my eyes open on used parts but not sure if used is a good idea?   I've been eye balling the Edelbrock X heads but those are as much as what this guys selling for a whole top end.  I don't believe these come with rockers though.

The Stage X heads are $2400, seems like you could buy an intake for under $600 and have known new quality parts instead of unknown quality used parts.
If the springs and retainers don't match the cam you want to use there's more money.
Maybe I'm missing something, but it doesn't look like a deal to me.

plus $ for a pressure check to ensure no water leaks? Sorry, but too many Dove users have had porous casting issues to not bring this up.

Ok thanks for the insight on this.  I will wait and take the advice from people who have first hand experience..    I will get the edelbrock stage X and probably the RPM intake.    There will be some variables when I do a top end rebuild and will have questions but right now its a wait for a good deal or untill I break the bank.   Its hard throwing down this kind of cash just because we want to play.   Poor man shouldn't be playing with expensive FE's but I've had mine for about 8yrs now and a little stuck on them now.
