Outstanding Jay. Thanks for joining a historic Ford engine to a mutually historic Ford cars and creating some history of your own. Of course your efforts were far more than just marrying the two together. Your past Drag Week efforts and your tremendous R&D on the Ford FE and Cammer Motor have paved your way to this point. Thanks for your efforts and enjoy your victory, you truly deserve it. ww

This has to be the most satisfying DW win for you after the last few years. What a job with all those 8's on such a new combo. I would have thought with 1000hp on an 11" slick you would have had more of an issue getting it to hook. Besides the engine that impressed me the most. Thanks for sharing the whole saga and Congrats on the win. You really made FE guy's proud. But what are you going to use for win #5? TTSOHC? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Congratulations Jay!  Talk about hard work and a never quit attitude.  As always, a blast and at times a nail biter too.  How you find the time to add detailed commentary here is something else, over the top 8).  Time for a well deserved break and then, what to do next year ::)

You just single handily increased the value ( at least in our minds) of all our beloved dinosaur engines.
All the FE builders around the country should be taking up a collection to keep funding your drag week exploits because of all the extra work it will bring them. :)

Jay, Congrats on the much deserved win!

Not sure it was posted but what was your vehicle weight track ready?

Yesterday the live feed was not so good and today right when I started to watch my internet went down until it was over.

As others have said what a nail biter!

I would think your car was one of the most anticipated of all entries . .

I'm quite sure that someday I'll be pointing out my cool intake adapter and timing cover to some young gearhead and find myself saying "let me tell you about the amazing Jay Brown...". Congratulations on a great win!  Ultimately we're all defined by our legacies, and you certainly have created one in the FE community.

Jakes66, your pic showed me a lot!

I had commented during Drag Week about chassis adjustments, et al. The side pics shows just about perfect lift, rear separation and slick wrap-up. If anything, I'd advise trying a 1 lb. increase in slick pressure, + 1 lb. at a time thereafter until e.t.'s increase and maybe one click down on the rear coil overs (to increase squat). Experimentation is key yet the car does have some e.t. left in it solely due to chassis tuning. JMO!

The slicks need more air going by that picture. Too much wrinkle. The wrinkle also needs to be on the forward edge, just in front of where the contact patch is. I think this picture is before Jay tightened the compression on the rear shocks. Jay what rear springs are in the car?

Was that shot at Union Grove?  Looks like it, but I'm not sure.  I can't remember offhand what springs are in the rear coil overs, I'll have to check into that.  Regarding air pressure we kept it at 12.5 pounds cold pretty much all week; it was about 13.5 pounds when the tires were warmed up.  I agree that based on the picture, more air pressure would be helpful.

The whole thing including the pre DW thrash has been fascinating and compelling reading. You have a great 'easy reading' writing style and it is a pleasure to live all the moments from afar. I don't know how you find the time and energy to accomplish all that you do, not to mention write about it in such detail. A massive tip of the hat and a hearty congratulations from the other side of the pond.

Might just go out to the shed, open the Fairlanes 'hood' and share a celebratory beer with my little wedgy FE. Well done!

I didn't want to "armchair quarterback" during the events, but my first thought was you need more air pressure in the slicks on that first run.  So glad you were able to finish the week and win!  Hope you will find a few more tenths in the combination as you progress.  Would be interesting to know how the first intake manifold would have compared et wise to the current intake.   Congratulations!  Joe-JDC

That does not look too low on pressure to me. I think more air might have just spun, the tracks seemed terribly prepped this year.

Actually the tracks were really well prepared, much better than anything I've run on before (except maybe Muncie in 2009).  Ran 1.28 60 foot in Union Grove...

With good power and a heavy car, the tire is going to wad up like that even with (almost) correct air pressure. A stiff sidewall slick will help, and/or running tubes will also help... although I hate tubes as they are heavy and will slow it down on the top end.

The old saying, run as much air pressure as you can... and still hook... applies here. It will drive better and MPH higher with more pressure, so it is just finding the sweet spot for that track, on that day.

I like M/T stiff sidewall bias slicks, I have run Hoosier/Goodyear, and they hold air good, but the sidewall goes away pretty fast, and a stiff sidewall wasn't available for my tire size.

Truer words were never spoken! As Jay noted the Grove at least had good prep, hence the great 0-60' time. Still, as mentioned above, more slick pressure should help. Experimentation is key here as if the car can do back-to-back runs, as Jay noted and did a few times, it makes it easier to test some quickly made changes like coil-over 'clicks', more/less slick pressure, A-arm limiter extension, rear 4-link changes, etc.

Jay what width rim and back spacing are on the car? I agree a stiffer sidewall will help along with tubes and more rim screws. You can try my M/T 31x10.5w's if they fit the car. I think with a GOOD test day we can get the car to consistently go 1.25 60's.

The Hoosiers are a stiff sidewall version.  Tires are 10.5/31.0-15, on a 12" wide rim with 7" backspacing.  Tread width is just over 11".  I used to have 10" rims and 5" backspacing, and didn't get full contact across the width of the tread.

That sounds like a perfect setup Jay.
