Too bad Street Outlaws and Dancing with the Stars is on at the same time.

I guess that's why I've never seen it! ::)

So how exactly does one drag race on a public road, film it, put it on a nationally televised cable show...and not get arrested?

They've got the cops shutting down the roads around the area.  In some of the earlier episodes, where they weren't really careful about their filming techniques, you could even see some cops in the background with their lights on.  I'm sure the city is getting a nice payday...

I saw the pics on Facebook(don't EVER watch the show) and it is beyond me why they pick streets that have concrete curbs on them. Despite what they say about closing streets etc. the show is still attempting to glamorize street racing. If they weren't, they could use either Tulsa or Noble and just do what they call a "No prep" race, which is another dangerous scenario given the amount of power these cars generate. Sorry for the rant but I am totally fed up with these bs reality shows which, IMO have ruined what used to be quality programming from these cable networks.

Ahh, thanks for the explanation. I don't have cable but have watched several of the shows on YouTube.

Thanks for the links, Jared. I had seen several of those, including the last 2. I just never looked into the details of the shows.

Alan, surely you know that "reality" tv is anything but? There are TONS of videos of idiots racing on populated highways and interstates. At least these guys do it on deserted roads. Something nearly every one of us has done at one point or another in our lifetime. Unfortunately, there are plenty of idiots who don't consider others lives on populated roads. That will always be the case, show or no show.

Yes I know what it is, that's why I called it "bs" and why I don't watch it.  ;)  Just because people do it doesn't mean there should be a show glamorizing it. I remember not too many years ago there was a documentary on street racing, from possibly the very same cable channel that airs this so-called show, that showed a more realistic view of street racing and why it is illegal.

I don't know if they are trying to glamourize street racing or just get ratings. Obviously street racing is dangerous, but I'd sooner race these guys on their "unprepped street", which has been closed off, with police and e.m.t. on stand by, than race some dork on main st. with his tuner car with a turbo that doesn't know how to drive. I'd also venture to say I'd feel safer racing the street outlaws than racing up pikes peak or doing the standing mile at 200 mph plus. As far as the crap reality tv, its all junk. But given the choice I'll watch street outlaws over "real bimbo's of Orange county" every time!
btw Alan, no disrespect intended.

No disrespect taken.  ;) I guess I am just lamenting the fact that there used to be actual quality programming on Cable networks like "The History Channel", "The Learning Channel", "The Discovery Channel" etc. where they produced quality documentaries where I actually learned something. Now even when they do try, it turns out more like a docu-drama. I was trying to watch a recent program outlining the rise of power of Stalin, Churchill, Hitler and others but it was very hard for me to stomach seeing WWI German soldiers carrying WWII era British Enfield rifles. In fact all the Allied and Central Powers soldiers were carrying No4MK1 Enfields. OK, no more ranting from me about "Street Outlaws". As I have been told before "If you don't like it, don't watch it" and I don't.  8)
