1967 Shelby GT 500 Bracket Racer
« on: May 06, 2015, 11:52:23 PM »
I've owned my '67 Shelby for almost 30 years and I've been racing it since 1991. It was raced by a previous owner as well. Brainerd International Raceway is my home track, but it's a bit of a tow and my previous career usually had me working most weekends, so I generally take advantage when racing the car by running multiple brackets, some times running all 3, Sportsman, Pro and Super Pro the same weekend. I occasionally run Super Pro even though I don't utilize any of the allowed "Gizmos" like a delay box. I do use a mechanical throttle stop though to slow the car down so I can run Sportsman ET ( 12.00 & slower ) so most of my runs are never "all out" full throttle.  And being bracket racing, a lot of the racing runs are "on the brakes". I did find a nearly full throttle run though from a few years ago. One important thing to note, and some might find interesting, most of the time I run the car with a single Holley 600 double pumper. Since I slow the car down and don't run full throttle most of the time I feel the small carb helps keep the throttle response up and lessens the amount I have to run the throttle blades closed. The factory Shelby roll bar isn't NHRA legal for quicker than 11.50 and I don't want to get into buying new seat belts every couple years either, so I keep the ET's slower than 11.50's. The original Shelby 428 ( the internals had been changed ) has been pulled and set aside, although I did race with it for the first 15 years. The current 428 used to reside in forum member Steve P.'s '57 Ford. The car is street legal with a change of tires.
