Jay; muffler location for 64 Galaxie?
« on: November 18, 2011, 06:32:13 PM »
I'm building the exhaust system for my 64 Galaxie with the 644HP 496 FE. I'm using ceramic coated Hookers with 3" ball flanges welded onto the header collector, from there it has an X system like this : http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-642130/

I'm thinking of putting the mufflers just in front of where the pipes turn up to go over the rear end, but am wondering is there's any problem doing this I'm not seeing ahead of time.

Sounds like a good place to me; that's where I've got mine.

I was hoping you would say that; thanks! I'll see if I can figure out how to get some pictures posted.

What kind of mufflers (brand), are they also 3" in/out and and are you using 3" mandrel bent exhausts after the mufflers?

Mufflers are Edelbrock RPM Turbos, 3" center in and out; all 3" mandrel bends before the mufflers; after the mufflers, I have some 3" bent up, but they're not mandrel and I haven't decided if I'm going to use them or not.

I asked because some of the muffler tests I've seen (heck, tests we all have seen) show some amazing differences in airflow and act, as we know, as the cork in the bottle. One of those tests (forget where it was published right now) had a little blurb about mandrel versus regular pipe after the muffler. The mandrel pipe IIRC flowed about 12% more than the kinked-up pipe.

Likely not a big deal in lower hp rides but seeing your engine's high hp output and need for 3" pipes, you may leave some hp on the table otherwise.

Yup, I've seen a few articles about that and mandrel bends are the way to go. I got the front part all welded up and in place today and I'm not liking how the kinked up tail pipes look. I need to get the fuel tank installed so I can see what I need to do for the tail pipes.

I got the mufflers a few years ago in a close out deal directly from Edelbrock; they look like they will not have much restriction, they split the exhaust into a Y and then Y back to 3", no sharp turns or baffles. I put one set of 2 1/2" on my 74 F100 4X4 and they sound good, so I'm hoping they won't be too rowdy with the 496 & 3".

Another way to run the tailpipes is to go below the rear axle housing.  Did it so the whole exhaust can be easily dropped and pulled out in one piece from the back.  Just had to make sure there was enough space below the housing so the housing can drop down all the way without hitting the exhaust pipes when the body is jacked up.

My 3" exhaust runs under the axle , only thing I dont care for is seeing more of it from the sides.  Does make it easier to drop it all off to go to the track.

Could you post a picture of a 3" exhaust running under the rear end from the side view?
