drivetrain questions
« on: September 28, 2013, 08:34:33 PM »
Hello everyone, been registered for a while, but this is my first post.
I just bought a new Moser nodular housing and I will be buying a new pinion support.
I was planing on a Daytona style.
So do I need a new yoke for a daytona style support, and will an aluminum support be ok or should I go with an iron one?
It needs to last.
Thanks, Tom.

I've run Mark Williams aluminum pinion supports for years with no problems, so I don't think that is a big deal.  Regardless of whether a new yoke is required, I think I'd recommend upgrading to a 1350 series U-Joint.  If that means a new yoke, then go for it.

Sounds like a full upgrade.
If you go with a 1350 pinion yoke you will need a corresponding drive shaft yoke and
of course a 1350 yoke for the trans and drive shaft to match.
You can mix and match 1350 to 1310/1330 stuff though, but it does kind of defeat the purpose of the 1350 stuff.
Anyways Welcome.

Typically a Daytona support requires a new yoke due to different spacing, not to mention the normal desire to go with a larger U-joint.

No issues with Aluminum, some say it could fatigue over time but that is theoretical, there is not a lot of movement there as the load is spread out every direction through two tapered bearings.

However, be sure it has a transfer path to oil the front bearing, I have seen some that have not.  I don't logically see a  benefit of not oiling the front bearing, but there are some out there.  Those wont make it on the street

Final thing is, look at how the u-joint caps work on whatever yoke you pick.  I have one that is very stock looking, and one that is very Chevy-looking with reverse Torx heads and stamped steel straps.  The Chevy looking one is my better yoke, but I just hate the way it looks and it seems like it takes forever to tighten down (although it reality it's not significantly different)

Not performance related but there is just something I hate about that yoke because it looks so anti-Ford LOL

Thanks, thats good to know about the oil passage. and this is a major do over/upgrade.
I should have started long ago. I have a lot of work to get done if I want to make it to the FE race+reunion. Thats the plan anyway.
I'll also work on posting some pics.
Thanks again, Tom.
