RUG AJ Transmision
« on: September 18, 2025, 09:54:38 AM »
Im a 4sp guy but was not a avid drag racer so when I came across a big in big out with a parts group it went in the garage, Its  a 69 Vin stamped RUG AJ 4sp transmission that has what looks to be new gears and no brass synchronizers that were replaced with a wider steel ring that is stamped with "Liberty" is this what can be called a liberty box? I realize it's a race mostly set up and I will never be using it what could be a fair value for it.

do you have any pictures with the cover off ?   Liberty does a process now that's called Face Plating but what you have sounds like the older style that uses Liberty's own modified synchronizers and matching gears

I got the pictures and tried to post them but, they are in a jpeg format and the forum doesn't except that format. I don't know why, it's very common.

Jay can you help out?

I'm not Jay but I think you need to use the file extension .jpg instead of .jpeg.

I use "Buzz 3D Media converter" to convert and resize picture files.
It's a free download and very easy to use.

It's an older program and I use it on Windows 7.
I don't know if it works on later versions of Windows...

If all else fails, I think you can simply rename your picture files by only changing the extension from .jpeg to .jpg.

The simple rename should work without using a converter program or app.

Maybe try this first... before downloading a converter app.

Yes, .jpg files will work.  Sometimes modern file sizes are too large for the forum software, so sizing them down as described above, or with Paint for example, will make them work.

I had this issue before, trying to upload pictures from my phone. It doesn't matter the size of the file. I tried just removing the "e" from jpeg file name. It doesn't work. The biggest of these files is 159k.

I found a program on my computer to copy them in .gif format and will try again.

It worked as a gif.

It's not a Face Plate trans but, the first version that both Nash and Liberty used used.

This is what a Face plate looks like.

Thanks Frank for the posting the pics. I've had this trans for 30 years and i know the previous owner never used it as he was a mustang only guy. Would this not be a street friendly transmission and considered a race only setup ? How could that affect its value.

I ran one for exactly two trips around town in the 90s in my Mustang with a 427.  I would NOT call it a street tranny and unless it's a racer, I'd say it would knock as much as a grand off it unless you had someone itching for it

As an old heavy equipment guy, I figured I could double clutch or finesse anything around town, i couldn't.  The early Liberty and Doug Nash crash boxes were not friendly to looking cool in front of girls or the police :)  WOT, different story.  I swapped the internals out of a Galaxie box and traded off the rest
