Rear end question
« on: March 12, 2025, 06:04:50 PM »
I am finally able to get back to work on my 63 Galaxie.
I though I had a 9 inch rear and ordered a new 440 ratio R&P, Strang case, bearings and gaskets.
However when I removed the tab it says it is a 3.25 ratio 8 3/4 inch carrier.
My question is will the 9 inch carrier fit in a case with a stock 8 3/4 inch carrier?
Thanks
Greg

Assuming the "8-3/4" you have is the Ford unit which happens to 'look' just like a "9-inch", and since your replacing the entire "pig", then "yes", it should bolt into the axle housing (just as the "9-3/8" will,....... sort of).  Earlier examples were referred to as the 8-3/4's as the ring gear isn't 9" in diameter, but later that changed/upgraded and the more common moniker was adopted.   :)

Do note that those earlier housings and axles are generally considered some of the weaker examples in the 9-inch family, so if your pumping-up the power any great sum, you might want to consider this also.    :-\

Thanks Scott
I was afraid of that. I will be putting out some HP but not a lot compared to what guys are building now.
I guess I had better break down and start looking at a new housing.
If any one need a 63 Galaxie complete rear with a one leg 3.25 gear and don't mind the drive to Oklahoma I have one for sale.
Thanks

No.
The 8 3/4 unit was the factory rear in the 63 Galaxie. I was confused and though it was a 8 inch because I had forgotten that Ford called the 9 inch a 8 3/4 inch back then.
I haven't been able to work on my stuff for a while and am just now where I can spend some time on them.
Hopefully I can get the 428 and 6R80 tranny mounted in it this month, then paint, interior ,etc .

Not easy to find these days, but the rearend from a 66 TBird with a 428 fits right under that Galaxie, and has 31 spline axles. I have had one in my 406 car since 1977- cost me $60. The big brakes fit right on the Bird housing, but if you car has the standard size brakes, you'd want to get the Bird brakes with the housing

Thanks for that info. I happen to have a 66 t-bird in my storage lot. I was getting ready to finally get rid of it but am glad I keep putting it off.
I have the new carrier parts to assembly when I get to it and will  run 444 gears in the rear ,then I can just exchange the 2  out.
This will save me a lot of time and cost.

The 390 66 Bird unit will not have the 31 spline axles

Won't need them as I will order a new set from Strange.
I plan on going out to the pasture this weekend and check out my old parts cars as I have forgot exactly what I have out there.
