Modern FE… sort of….
« on: October 02, 2024, 06:23:03 AM »
I’ve always considered the 7.3 Godzilla a modern FE… cam in block…cross bolted mains …427 bore size…..428 stroke size …. Or at least very close….. stock they do ok… saw this posted on one of the Pages …. Stock with cam change…. Peak 626 hp @5900.  645 tq @ 3900. 500 ft lb from 2500 up… it’s good day to be a ford fan.

Willis spoke at ford fest.

He apparently worked at Ford when either replacing of revamping the V10 was up, that got the Godzilla. He had a lot of interesting history.

He went trough the parasitic drag of all the accessories vs dyno set up and was very close to rated stock horsepower on stock engine.

As everyone probably knows biggest issues with stock godzilla is oil pan / oil pump and the intake / throttle body. Holley and others have addressed that Holley has a pan and manifolds coming out for trucks and its out for fox bodies.

My 7.3 oil burner sure doesn't make 325 hp and 570 torque at 3000 rpm....  :(

Im moderately interested here.

https://www.willisengines.com/videos-and-photos.html

The one thing i need to sus out is if the ford racing control pack will deal with the intake and oil pump swap, Holley EFI will not control a 10R80 and as far as i can find there is no stand alone controller.

Both Willis and Holley basically said the intake and oil pump is a packaging solution and if you're looking to run it in the stock RPM range you'll have a very difficult time beating the factory pieces....

Nice in theory, but the cost/availability of those puts it out of reach for casual experimentation.

Hopefully there will be more around in the future, to bring them in line with backyard budgets.

RE: the Powernation build. - That was a very abnormal cam for a shelf grind, big split in duration and wide LSA nothing off the shelf like that for an FE, though i suspect customs have been ground... They got very good power out of it Both he Holley and Ford Racing intakes are prettier IMO...

RE: Cost - Apologies if he says it in the linked articles, but he paid something like $1800.00 for a "core" engine and he knew it was from a cam failure. Ive not found one for anything like that (think 4500-5000 for a salvage one with reasonable mileage). If i could get one for $1800.00 id probably already be sitting on it.

Bonus - The engineer at Holley is putting one (a Godzilla) in a Cougar.

Bonus 2 - Apparently Holley has basically stoped developing new tubular headers in favor of cast headers/manifolds.

The owner of Willis, is Ford engineer Brian Wolfe. One of the guys who helped start the 5.0 deal way back in the 80's. Brian was the lead engineer on several important programs, as well as a stint as the head of Ford racing, where he got approval for the Mustang Cobrajet program, of the 2000's. He also formed the team that developed the new Ford Prostock engine 2006-2007, that never received NHRA approval, and was never raced. As we know,NHRA, did allow a version of the current "Warren Johnson" based to be used in the Mustangs, but never the Ford engine designed by Brian's team, while he was the head of Ford racing.

Hi All---
Revan Evan regularly has Brian Wolfe on his channel and has a sorta running commentary on the ongoing development of the Godzilla engine.

The owner of Willis, is Ford engineer Brian Wolfe. ...

Well that explains why/how he was driving a new Ranger Raptor with manufacturer plates...  :)

Modern heads need it.  I routinely design cams with a 12-15° duration split for FE's, all the way up to 117-118 LSA's.
