my first truck 1971 f250
« on: April 23, 2022, 10:34:11 AM »
back when i was a teen in the 70s my papaw had a 71 f250 he bought new to haul his camper.i got the truck of him when i was 18 years old.it only had 9000 miles on it.i ran it in a ditch one night and wrecked the pass finder and hit a culvert with the front wheel.i sold it to a man for 800 dollars and he quickly fixed it.forty years passed and i saw the man at the grocery store last week and i recognized him. i said do you still have my old f250 and he said yes.he said he parked it sideways on a hill and water ran through the hood seal and on top of the breather and into the carb.he said the engine will turn over-360.but the carb is frozen.he said it was not parked that way just a few weeks.i asked him if he would sell it back to me and he said yes.i said how much, knowing i almost gave it to him for 800 dollars.he said i could have it back for 500 dollars.i asked about rust and he said the body was good and it still had under 70,000 miles on it.he remembered my dad and was good friends with him is why he priced it back so cheap.he said he even got the seat covered and it looks new.i cant wait to bring it home.ANY IDEAS ON FIRST STEPS TO FIXING WATER DAMAGE WHERE IT GOT INTO CARB.i am going to fix it even if it means rebuilding or replacing engine.

Pull the carb off the intake, then take it apart. At this point you will understand if it is repairable, or needs replacement.

If water ran down the carb it is plausible it also ran down the intake and into the heads.
If you have access to a borescope I suggest sticking it in as many places as you can to see what is going on inside the engine.

Sitting, outside, with known water infusion opens so many possible troubles that is seems questionalbe at best to trust anything enough to try and start it up without checking things first.

Or, you simply shotgun the engine and build the 360 into a 445ci FE and be done.

That's awesome, fryedaddy! Congratulations on getting it back.

I have a similar story regarding a motorcycle; a 1980 Honda CB750F my dad bought new.
Dad sold it to a family friend in 1983. Sadly, my dad passed away at 57 in 1991 and sometime after that I told the family friend if he ever decided to sell the bike, I'd like to buy it back.
Well, in 2009, I saw him in a grocery store, and he asked if I was still interested in the bike, yes! He sold it back to me for, $500.
It had about 2500 miles on it when sold and 29,000 when I got it back. It now has about 32,000.
Will never part with this bike. Even though it was only in my family for a couple years, I have many memories associated with it and my dad. I still miss him dearly. But I know I'll see him again.

i now have my 73F250 sitting in my driveway.the original condition its in is amazing.the inside is almost perfect.no tears or loose stitching in the seat,no tears in the original floor mat, only 78,000 miles on it.whats weird is i put 39,000 miles on it in just a few years and he put 39,000 on it in 40 years.the owner parked it 3 years ago.he said the only thing wrong with it when he parked it was the exhaust manifold on the drivers side was leaking and then the carb stuck after he parked it.im going to take my time and clean it up,go through the brakes, tuneup, etc. before i try to crank it.i still cant believe i got it for 500 dollars.i could only find one dent,it was a small dent on top of the bed rail.very, very, minor rust in a place or two,but even then those spots look like they dont go much deeper than the paint.the paint is peeled in a few places.i believe i will clean the surface and clear coat it.i love the patina look on original cars and trucks.

It's always nice when you finally get something like that on the road. I've got 2 trucks that are similar. The 73 Camper Special doesn't have that much sentimental attachment, but it came with a back story, it's pretty solid survivor. I also have my Dad's 74 high boy which was also the first new vehicle he every bought. It's torn apart in the garage waiting for it's turn.

Glad you are getting some road time in on it now.
