Fords 1963 Indy Engine Program
« on: May 31, 2022, 01:36:31 AM »
I found this on the ST forum and posted it on the 332-428 forum but, I thought that it so interesting and and a important part of Fords history, that I would post it, here, too.

I was amazed how fast Ford took the almost new SBF, from a production engine, to a winning Indy car engine (Placed 2nd at Indy and won it's second race).

I followed what was published, in magazines, at the time but, this has so much more!

You must down load the file and then open it.

Did get it to open today Frank. Thanks!

Had no idea that Ford put so much effort into the pushrod engine. Knew it was a lot but wow, this paper clearly showed a huge effort in designing every single part (some more than once) for power and longevity. Knew also of the dyno testing but even more amazing were the granualr details of the actual Indy track!

Geez, they left no stone unturned and it paid off. The learning curve and wins paved the way for the all conquering 4-cam Indy Ford engine later. It won hundreds of races later on in naturally aspirated then turbocharged form.

Both engines here: http://www.wrljet.com/fordv8/indy.html

The one missing piece, that I was looking for, is there is no mention of when they adopted the 5.315 long rod. That was the length that was later used in the Boss 302.

That increased the rod/stroke ratio, from 1.796 to 1.852.

IIRC, the 289 and the Boss 302 used a 5.1545 rod.  The regular 302 used a 5.090

This would be the Trans-Am rod.   :)

This would be the standard production rod.     :)
