Heads off a mid 60's flat bottom boat
« on: February 15, 2022, 10:22:14 PM »
These heads came off a boat from 1966 with a 427 top oiler, heads C4AE, I can't make out the last letter but it has 2.09 intake and 1.65 exhaust valves. Did Ford make a special marine engine or head?

Unfortunately the pictures seem too small, without enough resolution, to really get a good look at them.

I will say, there is a C4AE-6090-H 427 Low Riser cylinder head casting, that might be what you have. They were kind of the last version of the 427 Low Riser head, and had those valve sizes. I’ve seen casting date codes on those at least as late as August 1966, which are usually regarded as an over the counter service head, but certainly it could be possible they were used on something like a marine engine, but if they are those they are not specifically marine. Ford did have specific marine engines, lots of variations of those. Here’s a picture of that casting number from the Internet, see if that’s what yours look like. It’s possible there could be other styles of how the casting number is arranged.

Thanks for that photo, it doesn't look like an H, maybe an O or a G but I think a G has the 390 size valves?
I'm gonna work on getting better at my attachment procedure and edit again.

C4AE-6090-G heads are the common FE head used in the 1964 & 1965 model years on the 352 & 390. And yes, originally they would have the 2.03” & 1.55” valves, but of course easy to covert to the slightly larger Low Riser valve sizes. Keep us posted.

Attachment a little clearer but don't click on it or it's WAY too big. I'm trying :-[.
I've had these heads about 30+ years since I removed them thinking all the while they were LR heads but more likely they are 390 with LR size valves installed.
Imagine my disappointment :o.

After the attachment loads, simply right click on the picture and select "open in a new tab". The picture will come up just fine in a new tab. Happens to all attachments that aren't properly resized for the forum.

I agree, looks like you have the C4AE-6090-G heads. That last letter on those can be a bit tough to read because it tends to be somewhat obscured by the imprint of the screw head next to it on the mold. They are fine heads, lots of people are fans of those, but just pretty much common FE head value.
