TFS Heads and head gaskets
« on: February 10, 2022, 04:15:49 PM »
I'm wanting to use a .020 thick head gasket, on my 4.150 bore engine with TFS heads. This is the info given on Holley's site:

Mr. Gasket Steel Shim Head Gasket

Fits 1958-1976 Ford 332-428. 4.420 Inch Bore, .020 Inch Compressed Thickness
Part # 1132G

Mr. Gasket Embossed Steel Shim Cylinder Head Gaskets are for high performance street machines, drag racing and oval track racing. This is a very unique design that has a solid metal on metal fold at the combustion seal. This fold makes for a very stout seal that is almost the equivalent of a higher-end MLS (multi-layer steel) gasket with a gas stopper layer, but at a much lower cost. This gasket also has embossments around the coolant and oil passages and has a thick aluminum flake coating. All of these features result in a steel shim head gasket that handles extreme cylinder pressures very well. It's probably the best steel shim head gasket you could ask for. Sold individually.
Features:

Embossed steel with aluminum flake coating
Solid metal over metal fold at the combustion seal
Embossed seals at coolant and oil passages
    Approximately .020" compressed thickness
For high performance street, drag race and oval track use.

SCE also has a version of it.

It doesn't address aluminum heads and I'm concerned that the steel might cause fretting to the aluminum.

I don't see this gasket talked about much on this forum. Has anyone used it on aluminum heads?

If this won't work, is there any .020 - .030 gasket, that's compatible with aluminum heads?

Never used steel shim gaskets.  They probably would brinell an aluminum head, but a lot of gaskets do.

However, I for sure have used Cometic gaskets with aluminum heads, including TFS heads.  They are available in a 4.165 bore, 4.250 bore, or 4.400 bore in both a .028" and a .030" thickness.
