FPA headers in a 4x4 Ford
« on: February 06, 2022, 12:39:53 PM »
I run Hedmans in mine, but they have the low truck port with ported D2 heads.  I have a build here for a very stout TFS .030 over 428 for a truck puller and can't use the Hedmans without significant modification and a step at the top of the port.  I know guys may say bolt holes can be slotted etc, not in this case unfortunately, I need .260 and then tubes start hitting pan rails.  Can be done, but would like to do this one nice and with realistic labor for value

Additionally, the Hedmans fight you on anything other than a stock pan, and this one will be spinning pretty high requiring a deep pan, so slotted holes and reflanging add more tubes being moved etc.

I have used FPA on 2WD, but anyone here running FPAs on a 4 speed 4x4 Ford 67-72, or up through 79 for that matter?

I have no concerns about the flange, but any fitment issues, especially pan clearance with a non-stock big rear sump, etc?

Other options for a flange seal header for CJ/early headers welcome too, but I think FPA is the only game in town for a full-length header

FYI this one is barely a street motor, needs anything I can throw at it.  Thanks in advance

Ross,

How different are the TFS Heads vs. BBM on the Exhaust ports/bolt location. Wondering if that is causing the main issue aka relocating the normal layout.
I mapped out my Heddman's and the BBM heads. There was a difference port layout wise, but far from .25. I think the largest variance was .125 but that equated to a 1/16 per side and the hedder side was larger, so no concern. I run a deep sump Milodon pan with no issues clearance wise due to the head change. This is on a '75 F250 4x4.
Just wondering if Trick Flow really moved the ports or changed some angles.

The only real issue I ran into was the change of heads, yielded a different landing point for the collectors on the hedders. Had to massage a tube, but again nothing major, no worse than needed to get the cheap heddmans to fit originally. These are the 89120 part #.

FPA makes some good hedders and they can modify them for you if memory serves. That is what will go on mine next time.

They should be the same, I may have to reflange and cut some tubes though, this is a stout one I need all the flow I can get

Back to the drawing board ahyway, today's news is  Stan claims no longer making the 4x4 headers due to material shortfalls and other projects....

Stan's in Auburn Washington or Stan's who is related to current FPA stuff?

I can stop in and see what they say in person, I will be close to Auburn. They can be a little difficult at times. I've heard one story on the phone and showed up and gotten a different story over the counter.

Stan Johnson at FPA.  I can call Stan's in Auburn, I do appreciate the offer though.  Forgot about them and their website is down

Sounds like a stout build, Ross. I'd have to build headers if it was me. Equal length 2- 2-1/8 step deals. Merge collectors. Maybe add pan evacs even?  Time permitting of course.

His Facebook page indicates he retired at the end of December.

Stan Fuller at Stan's headers retired end of 2021, however Stan Johnson, of FPA ,is still on the job.
