428 irrigation pumps and parts coming up for auction (not mine)
« on: January 18, 2022, 11:55:48 AM »
There are several 428 powered irrigation pumps and engine parts coming up for auction in Nebraska. Just thought I'd pass it along. Here is a link to the auctions:

Is Gessford in Hastings, NE still in business?

All seem to be natural gas powered.

Wish I'd known about this a couple of weeks ago when I was in Lincoln...

I had them do some work for me in 2020.

Screenshot of one from the auction website. I also took a picture from my 1970 428 Industrial engine manual, no idea if these engines are the same spec but might give a person the basic idea. If you buy one it looks like you get a pretty heavy duty run stand too.

Considering the group of 428 engine parts includes 2 sets of Ohio .030" pistons, I have to wonder if any of these engines are still standard bore? And with the Ford sticker on the valve cover, possibly been rebuilt or replaced in the past. Interesting looking exhaust manifolds, can`t say I ever seen any with the exit out the sides like that before.

The Ford Power Products 428 Irrigation Engine Parts manual lists using 2 part # C4TZ-9430-B exhaust manifolds, which are standard early FT exhaust manifolds. So it appears they are just turned upside down, to point up. The parts manual shows a combination of 16 bolts & studs for attaching the manifolds, so my guess is they are just omitting the center two extra exhaust manifold bolts FT heads use around the exhaust crossover, since they wouldn’t line up with the manifolds upside down, just a guess on that.

That would be the big unknown. How many times have they been rebuilt.  Gessford Machine Shop is only about 40 miles from both of these farms so it's possible they did business with them at some point.

Looks like the exhaust manifolds would work for twin Turbos. That is if you had room in your engine compartment.

Alan, In Jan 2001 we did some IUB crankshafts (5) for this customer near Davenport. My website is up and good to go as somehow I allowed it to accidentally expire.
We're still going strong and have lots of FE's in process.

I have had many of these come through, in fact, 20 years ago a buddy and I used to fill car trailers with no more than appreciation by the farmer to clean up the junk pile.

General characteristics

- Often #2 or #4 mains are cracked at bolt holes.  Seems like they run low RPM with parts out of balance, but not bad enough to blow up. Pumps are better on the block, grain drying fans are worse. I am at about 50% success rate after mag.
- Cranks are standard 428, but generally turned way down and with the ones that run big drive pulleys off the front, rarely pass mag. In this case, pumps are worse, fans are better.
- Blocks are usually ribbed, but can be anything, CX casting, and usually the worst for core shift of all 428s.  Can be great can be crappy.  Like I said for moy own truck and a recent truck puller build, it took 4 to get 2.
- Cams, heads, intakes, all garbage
- Rods are small bolt 390, nothing special
- Pistons are usually cast SUPER and usually beat to hell at the top ring land.  However, in chassis repairs often have all kinds of different pistons.  Remember these are low rpm farm repairs LOL

With all that negativity, we'll still take a run at them, if the prices stay, keep the good stuff, toss the junk.

Does anyone know the percent likelihood that any of these irrigation units would actually be elusive 427 centeroilers? There are FE legends that a rare few were 427 cubic inch with 4.23" bores.

Wouldn't it be fun to purchase one of these engine units and win the 427 industrial engine lottery? 427 industrial motors are a real thing, but aren't they considered a fluke unicorn in irrigation motor applications?
