Rev Limiter
« on: July 09, 2021, 06:11:38 PM »
My 6AL-2 box is ill. Looking for a stand alone, simple, (cheap) rev limiter. I have a MSD ready to run distributor. Recommendations sought.
Thanks

According to the installation instructions for the MSD ready to run FE distributor it has a built in rev limiter, so you shouldn’t need to buy anything else. I’ve seen people report that that is the case too. Also, be sure your rev limiter in the distributor isn’t set too low already from the factory, I’ve seen people report that too, when they couldn’t figure out why their engine wouldn’t rev up. Here’s a screenshot of the instructions I found online.

I would say that Pertronix unit is not cheap but something I would consider buying.
My 8595 does not have a gray wire. Just orange, black and red.
Thanks for the replies.

Same - Ready To Run should have one built in.  I usually set my limit to around 500 over what I think the lifters can handle.  The door car hydro rollers tend to sign off at 6500 so the 7AL-3 has a 7000 chip in it.

I have an older 8595 unit. There is no green wire in the loom coming from distributor body.
Thanks for the info.

Instructions I see use the grey TACH wire.

PROGRAMMING THE REV LIMITA tachometer is required to set the rev limit. The limit is programmed by running the engine at half the desired rpm, then momentarily grounding the Gray tach output wire from the MSD. A Gray jumper wire is supplied to connect to the tach with another tee-splice coming off to use for programming. A switch may also be installed to ease adjustments of the limiter (Figure 15). The default rpm limit is 10,000 rpm and the limit is adjustable from 2,000 - over 10,000 rpm.. 1.  Start the engine and bring the rpm to half the desired rev limit (for a 6,000 rpm limit, raise and hold the rpm to 3,000). 2. While holding the rpm steady, short the Gray tach wire to ground for approximately one second. Note that the tach will go to zero while grounded. 3. The tach will now display the programmed rev limit amount for two seconds. If this value does not register on the tach, repeat the procedure and try a different ground source. 4. To confirm the rev limit value, turn the ignition key to the On position (without cranking the engine). The rev limit value will be displayed for two seconds on the tachometer.  Note:  This rpm confirmation only displays when the Gray wire is being used to trigger the tachometer.

All true Chris but my version of the 8595 Ready to Run has one pigtail only. The updated version was built with the second pigtail which has a green wire which connects to the gray jumper. It took awhile to sort this out. I found an ad for the newer 8595 which states” now with rev limiter “.
I ordered the Pertronix 600 unit that was suggested by jmlay.
Down the road I will probably buy a 7 series box.
Thanks

Hopefully that will work well for you!  Did try to find any earlier instructions but didn't turn anything up.  Just trying to help!
