C6 Manual Reverse Valve body and possible 1966 C6
« on: April 28, 2020, 11:51:29 AM »
I want to replace the B&M manual reverse pattern valve body (purchased in the 70's)in my C6 with a new one from TCI (also manual reverse pattern) and the rep says it will not work in a 1966 C6. I'm not sure of the year of mine but remember it being an early one. How can I tell and what is different that it won't work?
Thanks.

"Some" '66 C6s were not "select shift" style. B&M did not make a reverse pattern valve body for those , so the TCI should interchange without issue.

The 1966 C6 was the one and only year C6 with its own unique shift pattern.
The 1966 C6 got nicknamed the "green dot" transmission because the green dot was what we call the "drive" position today.

The 1966 C6 shift pattern: P, R, N, 2nd/3rd only, Green dot/drive, 1st only.
All other C6's from 1967 on shift pattern: P, R, N, D, 2, 1.

If memory serves correctly this was a shift plate/valve body issue. If you swap out the shift plate/valve body to something newer I think the newer parts will work because you got rid of the 1966 only pattern.

If the trans you have has a manual valve body installed you are probably past the unique shift pattern problem already.

    Dan,
The "select shift" valve body was used on '66 390 Fairlanes with the GT package. You are right that it was the only style offered after '66.

Thanks guys. Do you know if only the valve body was different or the case also? I've always had an issue with my C6 when hot and on it hard in 1st it wants to bind up like reverse trying to apply, then when I hit 2nd it will jump into neck snap normal power. This is why I wonder if it is a 66 case that's causing this, I hate to buy a valve body and find out it's not compatible with the case. I just don't know what all the differences are. And if the valve body is the only difference why would the TCI rep say it won't work on a 66 C6, unless maybe someone wanted to use the stock shifter which makes no sense at all.
Thanks again
JK.

This thread may help explain the differences and what you need to know.

Excellent info link Steve. Thank you.
By the way those headers I bought from you last year worked out perfect.
