ive been sent here to ask you guys
« on: December 15, 2012, 11:34:04 AM »
hello everybody. so i think im ready to order my last bit of parts today! so here's what i got 428 std bore trw2245 pistons, balanced bottom end. comp 280h magnum cam, stock edelbrock 60069 heads with 68cc chambers, Harland Sharp S4006BKE rocker assembly, edelbrock rpm intake, hooker comp ceramic headers, decked the block to 0 clearance, msd complete ignition kit, edelbrock 750, edelbrock fuel pump, .040 compressed edelbrock head gasket, might port match, dont know if it will be necessary. this will be in a 74 f250 with a 4 speed and 4.10 gears with 33's. this should be about 10.5.1 compression. so what do you guys think i have here should this be a noticeable difference from stock, about how much hp? anybody done something similar.

I would say in the 425 HP range with good torque.
Sounds like a solid build.
I'd port match.

Well Ford rated a CJ at 335 HP, but they also rated a 390 at 320 HP.
The CJ that came in the cars was probably close to 390 or so HP as measured today.
Your cam is bigger than a CJ and the headers help.
Remember the racing CJ's of the 68 season was not a stock off the line CJ. I think it measure at close to 440 ci and had lots of tricks done.

For yours.
A melling M-57HV with ARP drive shaft, Restrictors in the heads to restrict oil to the rockers.
For the Ed's I think a 5/16" rod with a .070" hole drilled will work. I'd have to go out to the shop to double check that though.
A set of late style rocker tins custom fitted "lol".
Truck oil pans are not my forte. So I'd have to see a pic of yours.
A windage tray won't hurt. Make sure the rear main cap drain is open and clear when the pan goes on.
Use a silicone seal on the intake on the front and rear bulkhead. RTV Ultra Black or "The Right Stuff" or similar hard set goo.
Do Not use the Edelbrock "Print O Seal" 1247 intake gasket. It will leak.
The Mr G 202A will give you good service or the Edel 7224.
When you are going to bolt the intake down make sure you have the dist in the hole and seated.
It will keep the intake lined up.
There are some good posts and pics here that show this stuff so have a good look around.
And take pics and post and ask questions if in dought.
Have fun.

Couple of things.  One is I'd estimate the HP a touch lower than Howie, maybe 410 instead of 425.  I also would port match the intake.  Also, are you sure about the chamber volume?  Edelbrock heads have been coming in right around 72 ccs; have you measured yours to get the 68 cc number?

You will see a big improvement over the stock with that combination, depending on what you are calling "stock", of course...

Nice list. I should make a list also and send it to Santa.

The FE rockers are feed oil through a passage from the block up through the heads and the to the rockers.
A common practice is to restrict the oil passage.
With iron heads a Holley jet is stuck in the hole on the head below the rocker pedestal. A #70 jet is good.
On the Ed's the hole is larger and you have to make a restrictor. A 5/16" steel bar with a hole .070" drill in the centre and about 3/4" long
will do.
The rocker tins. They fit under the rocker pedestals and help direct the oil off the head and back into the valley.
There are two types. Early with the fingers and late with the square drop off. It is much easier to make the late style fit after market rockers than the early style. Although you can have go with the early ones.

I would use the FM/Sealed Power main bearing  Z125M10.
If your having a shop redo your rods and bolts you need to bring the piston pin you will be using.
They need it to size the small end with it. It is a very close fit and must be fitted to the pin.
I've never actually seen a Ed Head gasket up close. I'm curious now.
I was going to go on and on about main studs, but best to just let your guy measure it up for you
and make that call when needed.
These are all top shelf parts and fit great so you should have no real problems.

That list looks pretty solid. The old truck will be a horse.
X2 what Howie said about the main bearings. I've never personally used King bearings but have heard a few ugly stories.

That 750 Ed Carb will lose you HP over a Holley Carb. I bet 7~10HP you will lose with that Ed carb. JMHO
