Oil cooler
« on: June 06, 2019, 11:09:59 AM »
Thinking about adding an oil cooler, a simple 9x11 plate stacked cooler in front of the radiator.

I never liked the look of those sandwich adapters although I'm sure they work fine. In my pile of stuff I have a spacer from an FT that would have been used for an air compressor oil supply/return I believe that will work well and look better IMO. Fits between block and factory filter adapter.

Question is am I wasting my time and creating a solution for a problem that doesn't exist? Any experience before and after adding a cooler?

With this twin turbo setup certainly loads of heat is being dumped into the oil although I do not have a gauge to confirm temps. the thought is the addition of a cooler would help curb some of that extra heat. Maybe not enough but these are parts on hand and certainly better than nothing.

The oil cooler certainly wont hurt. If the block is filled it certainly is needed.

Not filled. Another thought, what about the transmission cooler in the radiator? Truck is manual.

While I have mostly worked with high-end European cars, I can't think of a turbocharged car that does not have an external engine oil cooler.

On my last few FE builds I have installed an engine oil cooler with a remote oil filter. Yes, it is a potential oil leak, but if you use quality fittings and hose you'll be fine. I use braided hose and AN fittings.

My findings are that an engine oil cooler does little to reduce the reading on your coolant temp gauge. It does significantly cool the...duh...oil. :)

If you can find a space in the core support that is not in front of the radiator the cooler will work much more efficiently. Most European turbo cars have either a heat exchanger right on the oil filter, or a stacked plate cooler beside the radiator.

While certainly not mandatory, I would seriously consider water cooled turbos a "niceity".

Fortunately I have quite a bit of real estate in front of the rad to play around with mounting options. 1950 F1

These turbos do not have the option for water cooling.

Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't find a larger cooler with AN fittings. The one I have is just barbed, good hose and good clamps it should  probably be ok.

The more I think about it the more mandatory I believe it is..
