ZEP purple industrial degreaser issue?
« on: September 05, 2018, 12:55:48 PM »
Hey guys, I bought a gallon of this stuff to help me clean up my C6 before rebuilding it. I filled a 5 gallon bucket with water and degreaser and set my tailshaft housing in it overnight. when I pulled it out it is now grey/cast iron color. I scrubbed it with hot soap water and also tried a red scotchbrite pad with parts solvent to no avail. I also pressure washed it. It is not greasy just grey.  I don't have a problem with the color but when I rub it with a white dry towel nothing comes off, but if I use carb cleaner it comes of on the towel but I is grey again when it dries. I am afraid the detergents in my ATF will pick this stuff up and contaminate my trans fluid. I wonder if I should take it to a machine shop and have it cleaned in their hot tank? Any thoughts? Sorry Jay, I meant this to be in the off topic section. Jim

Simple green does the same to aluminum.
They make a “smut remover spray” that often fixes the issue.
