Most likely out for Drag Week
« on: August 01, 2018, 06:03:23 PM »
I finally got some news back from my machine shop and they told me #4 cylinder has some pretty deep scratches in it and would require a overbore to +0.060 to clean it up. Aside from being short on time, I was pretty much going to retire that motor this year and look at building a 545 or 557 next year so I didn't want spend that kind of money right now. I do have another block but I want to use it for the bigger motor. I made a to-do list for the Mustang today and it's pretty long. Also since all the suspension has been replaced I would really like to spend some time at the track and on the road to get it sorted out. Another option is I have a nice mild 460 PI motor & a TKO600 sitting in the shop that I could dunk in the Galaxie and cruise the event. It's been in it before so I have all the stuff. I have been wanting to release my Galaxie from DW duty anyway and this would a golden opportunity to detune it back to a fun cruiser. Or I could get some drag radials for my '04 Mach 1 and REALLY just cruise the event but that'll cost as much as pistons. Anyway, not lookin' good for this year. If it still looks this bleak by next weekend I'll probably throw in the towel and email HR so maybe someone on the waiting list can get in.  :'(

Alan, that's a real bummer to hear about your engine. I really thought long and hard about not going this year, but I knew if I did, I'd miss it, so I decided to use this year as a time to just cruise through it and enjoy it from more of a spectators view, instead of racing the Mach. That's why I'm (hopefully) taking the Galaxie this year. Me and my son can sit back and enjoy the show more. As much as I'll miss seeing what improvements I can make in my ET's in the Mach, I'm looking forward to being able to really check out the other racers this year. If I can't make it in the Galaxie, I'll probably take my '09 GT and just do a 'tag along'. I'd still enjoy it. Personally, I'd like to see you there, so my vote is to cruise the event and enjoy it, any way you can. :)

Well I got the 460PI motor drug out of the corner tonight. It shouldn't take too much to get it all together but you know how that goes.

Alan, I have to say that one of the traditions of Drag Week is the last minute thrash to get the car ready.  As Freiburger said at one of the driver's meetings, "This is the largest collection of cars ever assembled that weren't running yesterday!"

C'mon Alan, bring that Mustang...

I am still plugging along on it. I should have a pile of parts waiting for me when I get home tonight. I need to keep reminding myself that since I won't really be competitive, just getting there will be a victory in and of itself.

Nope, too far for me this year, plus I'm tied up with a bunch of projects.

2 years in a row now. When you said you retired, I assumed it was from work, not Drag Week  ;D ;)

After 25 years of being self employed, one thing I learned is that if business is slow all you have to do is plan a vacation or to attend drag week or any other event and things will get that busy in the shop that is unbelievable. All of a sudden there are deadlines, emergencies, and a host of all kinds catastrophes. Somebody please explain this to me. But I am finally at the age where I am starting to not give a crap. Me time is getting to be more important. Like Nancy Reagen said, "just say no". What? too far Jay? I think I saw you at Beaver the last two years & that is far.
