Rear spring/caltracs kit
« on: July 03, 2018, 09:12:03 AM »
Crites restorations has a rear spring relocation kit which will add 6 more inches of tire clearance. If one was to go this route will the Calvert racing caltracs rear suspension kit still work including the new springs with the kit? Btw, this application is for a 1966 Mercury Comet cyclone with the jon kasse boss 9 460/572 hemi engine. Thank You! PS: Does anybody have a better idea like using a 4 link system, just asking.

You know James I believe there are some photos on the comet forum of the same setup you are mentioning .You will have all kinds of room with that swap .My 67 comet has 9" 29.5" and it is tight at the inner wheel well and the leaf spring as well .Maybe call calvert to see if their Springs will work .I believe they will as long as calverts spring eyes are the same as OEM and I believe they are .My comet uses the cal tracs and calvert racing leaf springs .Doug

I'm not familiar with Crites' kit, but I'm presuming it involves moving the leaf springs to the inside of the frame rail.  I did that move on my 66 Fairlane, along with massaging the inner wheel tub and rear portion of the frame.  I fit a 10" wheel with 30x10.5 slicks in mine.  I'm using Caltracs, but had them custom made to locate the lower shock mount slightly above and outboard of the spring so the factory upper shock location could still be used.

Unlikely you'll gain 6" of tire clearance but I assume that means 3" per side. Even at that, moving the spring inside the frame rail might get you something but on a Mustang, the tire rubs the inner wheel well about the same time it touches the spring. You can only bash the wheel tub so much and then the frame becomes the problem. Mini tub will help some as well as rear subframe modifications. A 4 link will require some serious work.

I would think - as if I would do same on my Falcon - that as long as you are mounting the springs same way the CalTrac items will work.  There is no science in the mounting - the forward side plates take up similar space that would be taken up with stock bushings.  The back end is a spring mount - works same without regard to spring location.  X2 above - you may get "3 inches/side" from the tire to the spring but other things will impede tire location before you get to use all that space.

Well I just called crites restorations and they told me they will customise their relocation kit to accomadate the caltrac system, just let them know first what I'm going to do. Thanks for all your replies. And yes, it is 3 inches on each side.
