E4od transmission
« on: April 13, 2018, 08:10:07 PM »
I have heard and read conflicting recommendations on whether or not to tow in overdrive with this transmission.  Anyone have any experience and suggestions on this. ?

We had a 1989 F250 , with 460 and E4OD and if I remember 3.73 gears. Towed right at and sometimes over the rated load. Usually kept it out of OD. I remember being told not to use OD. Sometimes, depending on the terrain, if it was on the level, OD was used. In my case the truck almost 75% of the time was towing.

Back with my new '96 F350 I would not use it with my 40ft trailer.   I know it would not be able to hold it in OD without constantly downshifting.   If I had a long down hill, I would let it into OD.   I think that is more the problem then anything.  If the truck has the power to pull it, use it.  It is the constant shifting that is more the problem.

Friend pulled his open trailer in OD all the time.   The V10 never knew it was back there.

Agree with Battlestar, if it will pull it in OD without constantly shifting go for it. If
load is overly heavy, stay out of OD.

The E4OD in my 95 Powerstroke  pulls like gang busters in OD. I have a Gale Banks torque converter and Trans command in mine. In west virgina on rt19 it had to be manually pulled out of OD going up the hills. It hasn`t refused to pull anything I put on my trailer. The tranny was replaced in 01 for a factory remain with updates and I changed the TC in 08 due to a imput shaft seal. Change the fluid and filters 55-75000 miles and go. Also add extra coolers to keep the heat down. It has 200,000 on it now.

Has a decent OD clutch ,  never had one with OD burnt up , the TCC is weaker than the OD in my opinion for E4OD , as long as the motor is happy and not shifting up or down all the time I say go for it
