"Taormina’s Superformance MkIII with an Italian inspired paint scheme is equipped with a number of modifications and is specially prepared to perform at extreme speeds. The “Italian Job” Cobra runs an OEM style Shelby Engines 427 FE engine that generates over 690 horsepower and 710 ft-lb of torque."

It surpassed Dick Smith's long legendary 198 mph Cobra.

Some years ago, a Cobra Daytona with a road-race 289 at +/- 400 HP went somewhere between 205 and 210 on the salt. Aerodynamics really do make a difference at that sort of speed.  :D

That's impressive. I would not want to go 200mph in ANY Cobra. A Superformance would be about the only one...or an Arntz/Butler/GS Motorsports...

If Dick Smith had 690 hp back in the day HE would have gone 210. He "might have had" 550 when he ran 198. No air foils or slick underside , Just testosterone.

True! I do remember reading that Smith said the car was a real handful and he must have meant "at speed". No doubt here!

But for the 3mph difference Dick Smith's was more impressive. I met that guy a couple times at vintage events and even got passed by him east of Palm Springs late at night in January. It was cold and we thought the muffler fell off, there was a roar behind us but no traffic back there. As Steve was about to pull over to check the headlights came into view and the roar got louder... took a few minutes, he was half a mile back or more, but that red Cobra came past with headlights taped up and two old guys all bundled up and with open headers, running on slicks!
