428 detonation problem solved!
« on: May 04, 2017, 09:45:17 PM »
Wow, OK, this has been years. I have done, everything. Exhaust, head gasket job, Holley carb with electric choke, electric fans, aluminum radiator ... ran great for about 15 minutes, and then crappy. Put a Pertronix on it, seemed worse. Took it to a guy in Tucson named Chuck Hawk.

No wonder I had to wait a month to see the guy. He figured out that my Pertronix had a bad magnet, set my timing, and it's all good now. Taken years! No more detonation! Best 90 bucks I ever spent. Timing wizard had some kinda laser gun!

So, Summit replaced the bad Pertronix, and now the car runs great. Never, ever woulda figured that out, that one magnet was bad.

Quick test: use a magnet, test that each stage has magnetism before installing
It's still a big heavy old car, and it is not fast 0-60, the way I drive it. "Turnpike Cruiser" it wants to go like 85. Will go 110 no problem.

Note that I also recently switched to PCV from just a breather. PCV is definitely the way to go with these motors.

This is neither here no there, take it for what you want. I recently drove this car from Tucson to Vegas and back. Still was knocking at temp, I was slow up some hills in the right lane. Leaking oil all over the place on the way back, but I tightened it all up. Still, was leaking some oil frommthe rear main. Not much, but I was narrowing down leaks, yeah .. they were all fixed, rear main leaking. I added some Barr's leak, or whatever and some Lucas oil treatment. Car runs great, oil looks good. No leaks. True test will be the next oil change. If it starts leaking again ... prolly put some more Barr's in it, TBH.

Timing. "Make or break it, literally". True. Thanks.
