FE Economy: Me And My SP2P

Thinking about the recent stabs at small cubes, adequate carburetors, understanding carburetors and intake choices.  For an inexperienced hobest this would raise some doubts if they could afford it and how they are effecting the environment. For those who know better it is boring.

If someone wants to tweak a big carb to run on the street good for them. Not likely to get the best fuel mileage or low carbon but it can be done successfully while opening up all the power potential.

If another person wants to build a daily driver that can effectively handle the duties of a $70,000 King Ranch good for them. Not likely it will get the same mileage or be as fast but it can be done successfully. Using 50+ year old technology does not always translate pollutant or being undependable.

I have had it both ways at one time or another. For arguments sake say most could write a convincing article about how wrong a conservative hobbiest is or out source them with certifications. That's fine. There is allways someone one step ahead of you. As for me I just figure it out. My 352/SP2P/Quadrjet powered truck starts, goes anywhere and stops with anything I have a mind to hook it.

One weekend I met my wife for lunch at Whataburger. After witnessing guys swarming around the 20' dump bed filled with dirt and concrete hooked to my truck she suggested I start taking pictures. Good idea, compared to stock 352/360 trucks I wouldn't have believed it either.

sounds like a fun project " going the other way " .... D2 heads would be sweet on this project with the tiny ports , try and run as much vacuum advance as you can .... this a manual or automatic ??

It is a manual NP435. I used rebuilbt 70cc D2 heads and ended up putting the original YA cam +4° back in. First had a 265 DEH but it was weaker than I cared for on the bottom and needed more intake. At the time I had a 650 speradbore Holley, Street Master and a set of 68cc C3AE-C Denver heads. I was tempted but for my use was not practical.

With 4.10 I can get out in trafic easy to 30 mph in 2nd buttthats where the cam runs out at about 4300 rpm.

Polished the crank and replaced all the bearings. The next thing I did for the first time was reuse all the 1966 OEM rings. I pulled them off scrubbed them and cleaned the groves out. It does not burn oil but the static is about 17psi lower on #8 but running compression is 32-33 psi across all 8 cylinders and leak down are all 90-100%.

Thanks. I found it on craigslist with a cracked windshield and original wheels for $500. I cussed it a few times before I had the bugs worked out. There are times when dehumidified defrost and an over drive would be nice but I can live without them. If you do find a bucket like mine and go with steel rims check the front drums for clearance. Ford rims with the Firestone F symbold cleared but I could only find 4 at the time so I bought trailer rims with weld beeds. All the others had rivits that would mash into and distort the drum once torqued down.

Do you have stock drum drum brakes?

I have towed up to 8500 lbs so far with my '66. No issue & 14.2 mpg towing @ 75 mph

Still drums. Looks like your wheels could clear F1 McClaren rotors. My F250 is still 4.10:1 rear. I have a between driveshaft and frame auxiliary gas tank from a 67. The dual exhaust needs to be rerouted before I can mount it. Does thar air dam block a void created by the cross member? I have wondered about it but never tested the theory.

How are your gears and tank set up?

This truck has 3.15 gearing in a 9 3/4" rear.
Smallest Wheels I could use to fit the 14" front brakes.

My other '66 F250 has a Dana 60 with 3.54 gearing
12.5" disc upgrade on that one.

Is that an air dam under the front or trick photography?

A regearing of my F250 are in the future.

With a 435 tranny I wouldn't change the gears! Your starting ratio will be much too high to get a trailer moving. Granny low is almost useless, you'd roll to a stop by the time it gets into 2nd. A 4.0 low T19 would improve that truck a ton. You lose the granny low but have a much better starting ratio, closer spreads and could pull a higher gear.
The SP2P has such a low RPM ceiling the closer tranny ratios will make for a much broader speed range in each gear.

I agree, it is better left as is for now. However there have been a few times leaving a gate on soft ground or an up a hill stop the granny low was what it needed. I am going to regear and possibly retranny when the other engine is done.

Tell us about those rims. I can't quite grasp what I'm looking at.

Mine are just new trailer rims. If yoir asking about Timewarp he has many secrets. His rims appear to be the spare tire rims from a 2006 or so F150.
